Ridiculously talented musicians

I just learnt that Josh Homme was 17 when Kyuss released 'Wretch' and still only 19 when they put out 'Blues For The Red Sun'. Frankly, that amazes me, given the utter wank student bands that I just sat through a few nights ago playing rehashed metal.

Your suggestions for the title of 'Too Good, Too Young'?

Patrick Wolf

Whether you like his music or not, definitely falls in this bracket.

^true dat.

Can I drop Sam from Youth Movies/ Jonquil in here just for the hell of it?

^ yesyesyes

patrick wolf was the first name to pop into my head.

KIRK HAMMET WAS LIKE 18 OR SOMETHING WHEN METALLICA RELEASED KILL 'EM ALL

oops sorry about the caps. there are loads of stupidly good teeny guitarists

One Hundreeeeed Degreeeeees

really? iw as listening to kyuss last nite as it goes! jesus....i didn't realise mr homme was that young.

to be honest pal...

I think Dave Mustaine can take credit for some of that, while James Hetfield wrote it at that age. Plus his rhythm work is fantastic.

Aztec Camera's Roddy Frame

He was around 16 when he recorded the truly wonderful "High land hard rain" album and is still a stunning musician over 25 years later.

the fall of troy

werent they all 19 or something when their first album came out?they are ACE

^ ditto that

add: Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. You may find the end results wank, but the guy's dexterous as fuck and has written several 'classics'

^tru dat

^^^

Fall of Troy make my cry they're so damn good.

Grizzly Bear

Disgustingly talented

but not disgustingly young.

actually, for their talent, possible.

ME!!

:-))

The Sex Pistols

They were only 19 when they recorded one of the most influential albums of the last 30 years.

HAHAHA!

sorry, I thought that was a joke

what...

that doesn't mean sex pistols are talented.

Steve Jones was an amazing guitarist.

Glen Matlock was an amazing bassist. And all together they wrote amazing songs.

So whats your point?

i think

were talking about musicianship here not just being good at what they did.

^untruth^

OK amazing is an untruth

good is more like it. Precise rhythmically and ace sound. He's better than Omar from MV that's for sure who people with no critical faculties seem to praise to high heaven.

A

metronome can be rythmically precise with a great sound, but that doesn't make it a virtuoso.

makes no sense

if there was a guitarist who existed who could play as tightly as a metronome then I think that would qualify them as being incredibly talented don't you?

Unless your limited definition of talent precludes anyone who doesn't fretwank.

Alright, lets cut the arguement to the chase.

Are you telling me that the Sex Pistols were not talented at a young age to write the album Never Mind the Bollocks?

Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I think he/she is assuming

that the Sex Pistols were not good musicians in a technical sense, as opposed to arguing about talent. Bit of a myth that punk bands of that era couldn't play their instruments well. I recall the engineer/producer who worked on Nevermind the bollocks saying that Steve Jones remains the tightest guitarist he has ever heard and basically never made a mistake.

...

To be fair, it's not really hard to go through a Sex Pistols song without a mistake, is it?

Mainly rythm based, cant argue with that.

But I wouldn't like to attempt some of the lead parts.

The drumming and bass playing cant really be faulted either.

...

Well I suppose if you're seriously suggesting Glen Matlock for inclusion in a talented (read: prodigiously talentes) musician thread, then I guess no, you can't fault it.

He has just as much right to be on here as some

of the other 'dubious' nominations!

3 Chord songs = amazing?!

They're pretty talentless and uncreative when you compare them to other bands of that time (Wire, Suicide, Television, The Modern Lovers)

Sex Pistols are overrated for their music. Obviously transgressive for it's time, but its heavily dated and unlistenable now.

BUT, I will say

Johnny Rotten is talented. He founded Public Image for fuck sake!

Like I said, mainly rythm based.

(you tend to get that with only 1 guitarist).

But if you could match any of his lead playing then you are a better man than I. Oh, and he wrote most of the music when he was around 18 to 19, which brings me back round to my original point.

weren't all of The Blood Brothers

like 17 when they released rumours laid waste? And Johnny was in about 2 other bands before them!

I'm not sure how old Lightning Bolt are

But they're stupidly talented musicians.

Johnny Marr

Was absurdly young when he churning out all the Smiths stuff wasn't he?

Yes.

And stupidly talented cartoonists/animators.

oozing talent.

Not that young, I dont think

But seeing Dream Theatre live made me want to just give up playing. They were that good.....its like....I'll never be that good.

they may be talented...

but they right shit songs

*write!

Pffffff.

That is my response.

^this

EDGAR JONES

does anyone else like him?

The Pridge is 23 i think.

He's good and all, but he's a bit ovver-zealous in a live setting

Architects

Sikth
Protest The Hero

None of the above can write actual songs but their guitarists will smoke your favourite guitarists any day of the week.

Yeah but they're all ripping off

Ben from Dillinger really aren't they.

Oh and Paul from BTBAM would destroy them in a shred off. Innit?

agreed but Weinman has been perfecting his art over a longer period of time

and now produces incredible actual songs instead of just technical noise. The folks i mentioned can't do that but can shred. and they're annoyingly young.

Fair

Ion Dissonance around their first album did a great Dillinger pastiche as well.

...

Sikth can't write 'actual songs'. Schwa?!

...

I think PTH are great songwriters, especially when you consider just how tech-heavy some of their tunes are.

All three members of Behold... the Arctopus are ridiculously talented, the live tracks on their debut album are virtually indistinguishable from the studio tracks, which is, to say the least, pretty mind-boggling.

Finally, word on the street is that the new Origin album is where it's at if you want to hear some ultra-sick chops.

Rolo Tomassi

Are far too young and FAR too talented. It's not normal. I don't like to think about it too much.

throats

are better than rolo tomassi arent that much older!

wait

'and' arent that much older

you can put HPR in that bracket too

I can't dwell on their technical brilliance or i realise i'm not that good at ANYTHING.

How old is...

Alex Neilsen (Alasdair Roberts / Baby Dee / Directing Hand drummer)? He looks far too fresh-faced to be as ridiculously good as he is...

I think he's 23/24

either way, he's disgustingly good at the drums, I don't get how he manages to play in a band like Tight Meat Duo AND play for Bonnie Prince Billy without his mind falling to mush.

johnny marr

was 21 when he wrote and recorded the queen is dead. bastard.

tommy stinson

was 14 when the replacements brought out their first record.
case closed.

Arena Rock

Much as everyone might hate them, Neal Schon from Journey was a musical prodigy and Tom Scholz from Boston got bored during Uni studies and started learning the guitar in his twenties...then he wrote 'More Than A Feeling'...

...oh, and Rory Gallagher is, like, God...

Sum 41

I'll get my coat.

how young was he

when they did their debut. gees. i'm in awe

jonny greenwood

end.

he probably popped out of his mum playing the ondes martenot.

You dick.

I literally opened this with the intention of posting a similarly amusing quip.

Colour

as in www.myspace.com/colouruk theres something really special about the music they make and they all look about 14, maths as in http://www.myspace.com/mathsband and rolo tomassi, as for the earlier comment about throats being better, surely their a very different type of band throats are very good at what they do but, surely their just another (albeit very good) metalcore group?

true

throats and rolo romassi are a bit different, but i wouldnt say they are too different to not be comparable,

their similar ages and them being on the same label was the only other reasoning behind my admittedly stupid comment,

of course they arent 'better', i just prefer them!
surely another metalcore band?? errr, i guess so,

maths seem pretty good, looking forward to seeing them with throats,
but a jeromes dream cover on their myspace?
hmmmmmmmmmm , not sure about that one

I quite like that cover and

if anything it's just maths paying tribute to what was a very influential screamo (in the old school sense) band.

I'm hoping to catch Maths and Throats next month as well although the only show their playing (aside from the London shows) thats close to me is in Luton.

Mozart

though i believe he was a crap drummer

...

Long Fin Killie.

i think...

james dean bradfield was 17 when the manics wrote motorcycle emptiness. props!

Jimmy Page didn't write Stairway to Heaven until he was 22

I could play it when I was 13, I think that says alot.

^ Alan Metcalf!

.

just cos he's blind

doesn't mean he can't control where he defecates

Dimebag Darrell (RIP)

got banned from all guitar competitions in Texas by the time he was 15 because he always won... That's pretty impressive.

does Owen Pallet count?

he looks young, and he is so effortlessly talented. makes me mad!!!!

well...

Jacko
Stevie Wonder

oh, and Hanson

Is age that important?

Obviously 'The Queen Is Dead' at 21 is very impressive but if he had written it at 41 would it be any different? Surely talent is talent regardless of when it displays itself in a person?

both members of Hella

just not bloody right.

I think John Frusciante was 19 when he joined RHCP

he used to practice guitar for 16 hours a day.

Tim and Chris Collis

make me want to barf with envy.

Also, Zach Hill, Victor Villareal, Jem Eaves.

He was 18

19 when mothers milk was released, he was basically obsessed with the Chili's form age 15 until Hillel Slovak died.
I think all the Chili's (apart perhaps from anthony kiedis) are extremely talented whether you like their music or not.
