Sometimes the idea is better than the execution, or the write up is better than the music.
For me, there are many, chiefly Pink Floyd and Of Montreal...
Yourselves?

oh dear
M83, My Bloody Valentine, Asobi Seksu, I think in general I like shoegaze but not as much as I remember liking it, or I've listened to so much of it that MBV sounds so generic in the scheme of things because everyone ripped them off. That's probably not what you mean though...
Guillemots, mainly.
There are probably more but they're the first ones that spring to mind.
Oh Christ yes.
I'd forgotten them...
lots of these
of montreal, boards of canada, pink floyd, led zep, queen, annie de franco, MGMT, muse.. gulp, the dismemberment plan ( i was SURE i'd love them)
The National
Foals
these
the national
neutral milk hotel (i think its great music, but not 10/10 pitchfork review great)
feist
broken social scene (I just dont get it. So far i just think 'super overrated'
xiu xiu
i really thought i would but the majority of the songs i really really don't. especially his cover of yo yo bye bye :@ :@ :@
This is going to get me hunted down and killed...
both At the Drive-in and The Mars Volta fall into this category for me. I was SURE they were just my cup of tea after hearing about them, hearing a few odd singles but... I like 'relationship' and I like 'deloused' but I don't LOVE them. They're good records. Solid records. But I was expecting to be blown away and I wasn't.
Grinderman
its good and all but i thought i was going to LOVE it.
I think the same about Relationship...
It's very good, but not 10/10 to me.
Los Campesinos
hate them hate them
dull dull dull, and after a while, annoying annoying annoying
Pretty much exactly this
First time I heard 'Sweet Dreams, Sweet Cheeks' I thought it was great and now the band makes me feel a bit ill.
I don't really know
what this question is, since the majority of bands I've found have a couple of superb songs and then an 'ok' album, which I will not be giving the time to grow on me I'm afraid. I'd say twisted charm have the potential to be great if they got a bit more lo-fi and more noisy.
Most post rock dissapoints me
because I assume I'll love it like I love Mogwai.
Often, I don't love it like I love Mogwai. At all.
Mainly, a lot of the art-rock crowd
Xiu Xiu
Dirty Projectors
Animal Collective
LCD Soundsystem
Hercules & Love Affair/Antony
Fiery Furnaces
Lungfish
Battles
The Books
Liars
Sweep The Leg Johnny
Laurie Anderson
Man Man
Akron/Family
etc
not that I dislike the above, mind...and I think they end up providing a giant service to the more 'mainstream' acts... but I don't often listen to many of these more than a few times, eh.
Agreed on Pink Floyd (sans Syd)... they suck balls.
god
pretty much every band in that list is full of win.
oh and i'd like to add lightspeed champion
to my choices too please.
oceanRain
get back on Liars fool! The rest are spot on picks.
Blur
Pulp
Radiohead Kid A Amnesiac era
I listen to these and think what am I missing?? A lot of the bands I like are said to be influenced by them, I like a bit of their stuff but just not overall can't get that immersed.
listen to
"do you remember the first time?" by pulp
and
"this is a low" by blur
two of my favourite ever songs.
although yeah, i'm not a huge fan of the other stuff as much
but those two songs are in my top ten songs ever. crazy how my favourite song isn't by my favourite band.
This is a Low
is wonderful. And I fecking hate Blur.
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3
Any screamo that isn't Alexisonfire
The White Stripes
Klaxons
My Morning Jacket
Glasvegas
Alexisonfire
go in my "should like but just doesn't click" pile.
Mostly stuff I like just not as much as people who like the same things as me seem to
Animal Collective,
Battles,
The Avalanches,
Guillemots,
Wire (although I love some of their songs),
Bright Eyes,
Shack
why is this?
a strange phenomenon!! yes i think of montreal, mgmt, sonic youth (although i haven;t really listened to a lot for this reason) theres probably others
so many bands...
it's ridiculous.
people hype them to me to the point where there's no actual chance of them being as good as i then anticipate them being:
foals (unbearable)
mars volta (crushing disappointment)
bright eyes (good sometimes)
just..plenty.
Les Savy Fav
Uh huh
Arcade Fire
I've tried, I really have. I just don't get it.
Guillemots
Loved annie just dont wait or something like tht... album was a shocker
get over it
Times New Viking
Most things involving the label 'anti-folk'.
you're missing out
they are a great band.
agreed
of montreal definitely
misguidedly bought that album. ummm also pink floyd as well. there's loads of bands i thought i might like: vampire weekend, yeasayer, that band with the silver cover who sound like they're a glam rock band... umm what's their damn name? animal collective, prinzhorn dance school, glasvegas, thousands...
Hot Chip
Get Cape Wear Cape Fly
MGMT
^
Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.
A really dissapointing, warbly traipse through a life which the posessor is desperately trying to make interesting.
This and My Bloody Valentine. (not the warbly traipse bit, just thought I'd like them more than I do.)
and
Smashing Pumpkins.
Sonic Youth.
I thought they would be life changing , they weren't.
get 'dirty'
have you really not fallen in love wit da yoof?
Yeah Foals and
Vampire Weekend were quite ok but not at all memorable. I remember feeling disappointed, like after you eat a chocolate mousse and realise it's essentially air
yes
foals yes disappointing not vampire weekend in my opinion
where did that post?
umm please add lightspeed champion under my post please.
earth...
what the fuck is going on there? i really don't get it.
Its drone music
only people who want to look clever get it.
if you'd actually listened to earth
you'd realise how far off the mark you are. earth aren't a fucking drone band. they sound like neil young and ennio morricone played at half-speed.
^^agreement
earth are are great band.
it's background music
it's fine but i wouldn't really actively listen to it.
chunnggggggggggggaaaaaachunggggggg. that's basically the gist of it.
..
They only actually made 1 or 2 records that sound like that.
It's not background music
if you listen to it obnoxiously lod.
i listened to earth
i just sounded like one guy playing guitar for a hour really slowly, recorded on a four track.
i do a similar thing at home, but i'm not Kurt Cobains best mate.
Hercules & Love Affair were not the 9/10 I expected.
Xiu Xiu, Shellac.
Has to be
Foals
The Beatles
Godspeed
Boards of Canada
The Beatles
Mars Volta
My Morning Jacket
Goodspeed is limp
oh well
The Hold Steady
Husker Du
I'm a massive fan of american indie rock and i love dinosaur, replacements, lemonheads. I even like stuff like counting crows, but the above bands just don't do it for me.
if you like the mats
how can you not like husker du or the steady?
seems amazing to me...
^ this confounds me too
Even though i love em
I hear lots of people say this about FUGAZI.
^admittedly they took me a while...
Ok bands I thought I'd love?
Radiohead
The Rolling Stones
(Just don't get em!)
I'll mention
Radiohead, too. They just dont do it for me, but I dont dislike em
some of this
is just crushingly disappointing..,people that dont like the stones, husker du, the hold steady, sonic youth, earth...this is a bit upsetting....'the beatles'???? is that a joke????
Why should it be?
I only like a few tunes here and there by the Beatles; a lot of it bores the piss out of me.
^ Amen
Finally someone else who doesn't get the Stones!
I resisted Arcade Fire
Every music mag around was eating out of their hands, I previewed some tracks at the shop and jeez, nothing- never bought em. One thing that impressed me about Dis right off was that I didn't see "Neon Bible" clogging up the top ten of 2007 best.
One LP that came out recently that I had high hopes for but sadly fell short was
"Go Away White" by Bauhaus - it didn't suck but it didn't bowl me over either.
lots.
the national
panda bear
feist
bright eyes
to name a few..
Les Savy Fav
I just dont get what is so amazing about them. They have a few ok songs but the rest just bores me.
I would like to see them live as they do have a reputation for being good.
If you are just basing this is Let's Stay Friends,
forget that and listen to Go Forth, it's way better. And yes, they are an absolute riot live.
20years ago
it was TIN MACHINE!
nuff said I think.
oh yeah, and Coal Chamber
incredible string band
bearded folk and stoned dolly birds that probably live in a commune, take acid with their early grey and sing out of tune and bash their instruments and pretend they live in merrie olde albion are normally right up my street. so why is "the hangman's beautiful daughter" so unspeakably awful?
Broken Records
Sadly :(
I'd listened to their EP a few times- first off, thought they were amazing. Then I started paying attention to the lyrics, which are really quite clumsy. On the plus side, he can really sing, and the vocal melodies are very affecting. But, for me, clunky lyrics and the constant bouncy bombast was enough to knock a few points off.
hmm
the last shadow puppets, i really have tried with their new song but it's not catchy at sll.
Long Blondes
