Leicester "unique" gig venues and tips on organising first gig night

Decided to throw on a charity gig in Leicester as a post-exam spin off for students to let their hair down after the slog of exams in June

There will be 3 bands on the bill with an indie-tronic DJ set, all monies raised going to a local Leicester charity

any hints on good bars/ gig venues which would be ideal for this? something different from The Charlotte/ Sumo

i've been talking with Original Four so far but think that lacks the capacity, looking to get in circa 150 people in

any hints/tips on this kinda event management would be welcomed too :) cheers

you could try

the half time orange
firebug
the looking glass
the pride of leicester
the shakespears head
the shed
leicester square

the Repeater night on friday at the DMU student union sometimes has bands on. as it is for students then it might be worth trying.look on myspace.

:)

cheers mate, firebug is a pretty decent venue, will mailshot them :)

I run Repeater...

...drop me a message if you want to talk about doing something there.

HTO's closed to bands now, as (i believe) is The Pride Of Leicester and maybe Leicester Square (i used to do the shows there, and i don't work there anymore).

Sumo or Firebug are my personal favourites, but they're not really unique.

firebug is 100 capacity

demont uni might be a better option. johnny can advise you on that. you need to speak to grant from the dirty backbeats over sumo

and then go to

www.pineapster.com

if you get stuck.

DMU Union

can't host bands can it, thought it didn't have a live PA anymore.

Otherwise, I think I may have been fucked over for Kyte, Her Name is Calla and This Et Al ;)

It can...

but a PA needs to be bought in. There was a complicated set of PA related shenanigans leading up to the Kyte/Calla show which meant it got moved, postponed and eventually cancelled. It's a long story for telling on winters evenings.

You'd think with the money they throw around on rubbish

They'd get a PA.

If only DMU was still interested in having bands instead of Karl Kennedy and that kind of rubbish. Ah well, their loss is Leicester Uni's gain!

oh, also

Someones putting on shows at the All Saints Church - but i don't know where that is, or what it's like.

are they? who

all saints church would be a brilliant venue, its a de consecrated church on the A50, not far from mosh.

I know where All Saints is

Gigs there would be fantastic, I know a few cities/towns/villages do that around the country but I have no idea how someone would go round and making it happen.

Who would you ask, God?

i guess so

it's his house. allegedly.

it's happened a couple of times in leicester.

kev hewick and some others did a couple of gigs in st andrews in aylestone. the use of all saints for some form of musical gigs would be a brilliant use of a redundant building. not sure it's ideal for major indie stuff, but its still an ace idea.

Another thought...

People have been doing informal art stuff and dubstep stuff in the derelict frog island mill - again, i have no idea how you'd organise that, but it's an idea.

yep

thats the bloke

another though...

I know of someone who owns a warehouse down there. We may be talking about a similar venue. I don't think he charges, just takes the money from the bar, all not very above board, but it's meant to be a good space. Not too sure if the sound would be any good...

Firebug is probably the best bet though.

hehe

mosh.

all saints church

would probably be better than repeater anyway.

probing into all saints church

have popped elvis (all saints church) an email, sounds like an interesting venue so will take a drive down once he gets in touch and spec it out , so far have 2 bands signed up, waiting on one :)

any contact for this warehouse malarkey?
