I just found my 13 year old self's band's first e.p, "The Social Protest E.P". It has 5 songs, recorded live with overdubbed vocals and another 5 covers that we did live with the remaining "studio time", including a really hilarious one of nirvanas rape me and Otherside by RHCP.
As you may tell from the title, we were all really into rage against the machine.
Social protest is gonna take the net by storm. Risin' back from the grave to say "FUCK YOU!" to the man.
Oh god we actually did a rage against the machine cover
the guitar is pretty good actually, if I do say so myself.
Oh yeah, I guess we could turn this into a "post songs from your old and embarrassing bands" thread. Do that.
our vocalist does bo selecta style rapping over the top of my damn solo
SO POST IT
i want to hear
YES!
I so, SO want to hear this. Genuinely.
SOCIAL PROTEST!
I need to upload my Pitch Invasion songs at some point. They ruled the school.
Yo:
http://www.myspace.com/fhre
I shouldn't be allowed near a microphone, ever.
where you 'ANGURT rapcore' in the style of downset?
nah we were "COPYCORE"
we had 2 songs that sounded like RATM, one song that sounded like RHCP (I wrote that one, naturally), one thats almost post-rocky but is still very much GUITAR ROCK, and our "anthem" with a big fuck off echoey guitar solo at the end of it.
Here's a sample of our lyrics, we were actually so fucking good:
"You're not just a cog in the machine!
FUCK THEM!"
We were all literally 13/14 at the time, so go easy.
:D
Please, just post them up somewhere. Or yousendit them, OR SOMETHING. I can't bear not being able to hear this. I need SOCIAL PROTEST in my life.
seconded!
^^^^^^^^^^^
Can Social Protest have a DiS listing?
Please?
Social protest - Track 1
(can't remember what it's actually called)
You MIGHT just be able to here the rage against the machine influence if you listen carefully...
The line up was
Me - Guitar
Gordon "Forbsy" forbes - Vocals
Ross "Clarky" clark - Bass
Ross "Gibbo" Gibb-stuart - Drums
http://www.zshare.net/audio/10383711b4cd1368/
Tell me if that's working. It was being a bit dodgy with me.
:DDDDDDDDDDDD
haha :D fantastic
it's the vocals that do it
they really make it
Indubitably
Not that you can make out many of the lyrics...
WE WERE 13
or maybe 14 i can't remember
"DEMOCRACY IS NOT THE WORD THAT APPLIES TO YOU!"
i know, i'm not being cruel
it genuinely made me do a big silly grin
and, tit for tat, confession time:
When I was like 9, I was in a "band" with my neighbor and my little sister. But actually we just sang, and actually we didn't sing anything together. It was like a 2 day project. We formed and named ourselves one day and rehearsed that day and the next, and then we put on a concert for our parents in my garage where we each sang a song individually. That was it. We were called Black Magic (and that was the *best* name we came up with out of about a dozen between the three of us). We thought that name sounded pretty great and were even a bit proud at coming up with it. I have to stop short of telling you what I sang. Yikes, I always forget about the old "band."
i've just done a big lol
at the full realization of how shite that name was. i mean, i knew before, but i hadn't realized it wholly and completely until just now i think.
so downloading this when I get home. :D
The track's tagged as "Roulette Dares"
I'm guessing that's the real title.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention
We started off as "social protest" for the first few months, then we all got into at the drive/the mars volta and decided we should rip off a mars volta song and use it as our band name. We chose "roulette dares". The end.
i so want to hear this
damn my laptop's broken speakers :(
on a completely unrelated note: HOW MANY SCOTTISH PEOPLE ARE THERE CALLED ROSS CLARK? seriously, this is the fifth one i've come across.
Here is our Rage Against The Machine cover
http://www.zshare.net/audio/10385161de81846a/
FUCK YEAH
I'm pretty happy with my 13 year old guiguitaring on it
(this was recorded as a bit of a joke by the way, you can tell because the singer keeps saying "cha-mon" like bo selecta over my fucking guitar solo. I can't help but laughing at it. It's fairly hilarious)
:D
This amuses me, thank you.
SOCIAL PROTEST IS VERY SERIOUS BUSINESS
the hee-heees in the solo
lovely
Amazing :D
if you want social protest...
look no further than SONC PARTY! the most politically challenging and radical band on the face of the earth, I love them
http://www.myspace.com/soncparty

Brilliant.
TAKIN' BACK THE WEB. THE WORLD WANTS A SOCIAL PROTEST AND BY JOVE THEY'RE GONNA GET IT.
I Have more up for offer if people are interested. I have another rage against the machine cover, the RHCP cover, our "signature" 7 nation army cover, a completely bizarre version of Rape Me that segways into Layla by eric clapton or some more original songs.
What do y'all want?
All of it plz.
description and photo!
people want to know more.
I <3 your posts.
But SRSLY
the singer's, gordon "forbsy" forbes new (well, must be about a year old now i guess) band are genuinely properly fabby, so check em boi.
www.myspace.com/tamikastreehouse
(but he doesnt sing in that one he does guitar)
i am upset
that no one else divulged their embarrassing childhood musical acts in this thread, as was the point. it would have been interesting. and it would have made ours seem less embarrassing.
There are a couple up there,
if you look very really close, like 'Future Hero Robot Empire'. That one isn't actually that bad...
Not really a childhood thing
it was something during the heady days of 2003 ish. Actually it was fun- electro-pop mocking the rise in naff celebrity culture whilst at the same time contributing in a minor way.
www.floodshock.co.uk
Note: This was pre nu-rave. Ultra budget drum programming ahoy!
I'm uploading our opus
it starts off as Seven nation army, then there's a really awkward "jam" into a comedy version of that deep purple song, then into the kill bill theme tune finishing on the lovely sound of 2 teenagers tuning on mic
We actually got like the best recording price ever. I think it was £80 for a whole day in the studio with an engineer. It sounds pretty good for a live take too.
I wish I was in a band again :(
ok, here it is
the singer plays guitar on this one too. You can tell which one I am because i'm obviously really pleased I got a whammy pedal for christmas.
http://www.zshare.net/audio/10484566272bdf94/
it's so odd.
I miss the camaraderie a lot. Getting a lift to the studios in someone elses mum's car... Getting a burger king on the way home... our drummer bringing his weed kit in his Queen: live at wembly VHS box because nobody would find it there... Playing gigs in someone's shed...
Brings a little tear to my eye.
:D So, are these files to be tagged as
SOCIAL PROTEST or Roulette Dares?
whatever you like, hunny
we were originally called social protest then changed to roulette dares, but I think we sold the E.p as "the social protest e.p". We did pretty damn well off it. Made loads of cd-rs and sold them for £1 each at school. Made at least £50. Brillo.
