Yes, I know this is in the wrong place etc. etc. but it's kind of a companion to the Australia one and those drongos did it in the wrong place first.

Does anyone lurk from New Zealand by any chance - I seem to remember one other poster from there, and Codswallop has excitingly been to Levin once. And that's about it.

Having not lived there for quite a while, I have fuck all recent knowledge about bands from there at the moment - I think Cut Off Your Hands and The Brunettes are the only NZ bands I've listened to and liked recently. Help me out here...

I am not sure if I went to Levin.

I was born in Otaki though, about an hour north of Wellington.

Whereabouts do you hail from again?

ive never been to NZ

but die! die! die! are from wellington and they are EXCELLENT. and so so modern are too.

My band supported Die Die Die

unfortunately it was before I had joined them :(

Oh yeah

I'm not huge on Die! Die! Die! but So So Modern are pretty cool - saw them support The Kills in Wellington just before I left and they were probably slightly more enjoyable if I remember

My bad

Otaki and Levin are pretty much right next to each other, and are pretty much interchangeable to be honest. Although Otaki has the Bendon underwear factory seconds shop which probably gives it the edge in stoppability factor

Ah, but so does Levin

I'd already factored that in and realized they cancelled each other out in the Excel Levin/Otaki Supremacy spreadsheet

Shocking Pinks

album is a bit patchy but there one or two really good songs.

Also- not from nowadays but any chance to recommend The Verlaines is worth taking, no matter how tenuous- 'You're Just Too Obscure For Me' is an amazing compilation.

Yeah, the Shocking Pinks - I keep forgetting all these people

The Verlaines are just an amazing band, no question - there was certainly a pretty rich vein of talent in the 80's/early 90's NZ scene - not quite the same now unfortunately

I really do wish I knew more about that whole Dunedin scene actually

All I've got so far are The Verlaines. Any tips?

Absolutely

The big 4 are probably The Clean, The Chills, The Verlaines and Straitjacket Fits.

The Boodle Boodle Boodle EP by The Clean is essential, plus their early singles like Tally Ho & Beatnik are easy enough to come by.

The Chills were more 'indie pop' than the others really - Pink Frost, I Love My Leather Jacket and Heavenly Pop Hit are pretty good starting points.

The Verlaines you know about and Straitjacket Fits are probably my favourite NZ band - The Life In One Chord EP is absolute genius - Dialling A Prayer & She Speeds are melodic and dramatic with weird song structures...almost perfect songs IMO.

And The Bats, The 3Ds, The Skeptics and Chris Knox are all worth further investigation if you ever come across them

I should put up a muxtape of some of this stuff maybe?

I'll try to do it at work tomorrow

It takes an age to upload to the site so at least it should kill off some tedious work time

The Ruby Suns?

Aren't Ruby Suns from NZ (or at least based there)?

Yep

American but based in NZ

Mint Chicks

Mint Chicks
Mint Chicks
Mint Chicks!

Also, the Scavengers, Spelling Mistakes.. Ahh, bless. So much good music.

the mother flippin!

This is whom I was going to say!

SO GREAT!

They call me the hiphopoppotomus, my lyrics are bottomless... *awkward silence*

I dont get that.

It doesnt make me laugh. Apparently they are hilarious though.

Pumice

he

seems to be on tour in europe (not the uk though) at the minute...

Ladyhawke

not to be confused with Ladyhawk

she signed with modular/island at the beggining of the year and i think her single "Back of the Van" is out now, or at least doing the rounds on MTV2/radio 1.

It's really 80s retro pop stuff that she does, but she does it really well i think.

Why am i bigging her up so much? cos she's my friend, aww.

Actually

I saw the end of her set at Fabric a few weeks back - pretty good. From Masterton or something, right?

i can't remember, i should ask her this...

she told me she was brought up on a farm, but i guess this could be anywhere, i dunno!

the bass player in her band is the younger brother of the singer from the Datsuns, another NZ band not mentioned on here yet.

Isn't she at that Vice Kills thing tomorrow?

think i'm going to that

yes, yes she is

should be real good!

can't go though.

:(

The Dead C

... that is all.

Indeed

Second the Pumice recommendation too. 'Raft' is good stuff.

I lived in NZ for a year

but I was eight at the time and the only records I remember hearing were by Tiffany and Midnight Oil

Im From Wellington

FACT: NZ invented Indie.

The Chills,
The Clean,
Straitjacket Fits.

Was going to put together a muxtape one day...

and Look Blue Go Purple

forgot those niggaz.

Salmonella Dub

Nuff said. Inside The Dub Plates = good times in Windy Wellington.

I'm from NZ

Don't think these were mentioned:
Lawrence Arabia
Fat Freddies Drop
Shapshifter
Jakob
Liam Finn
Hollie Smith
But you've got to check out The Ruby Suns if you haven't already.

*Shapeshifter

oh fuck I totally forgot about

The Phoenix Foundation!!!!
:/

fat freddies drop

awesome

Mi-Sex

Com pu pu pu pu pu pu pu Computer GAMES.
der ner ner neeer

no?

ok.....

wow

The Chills and Straitjacket Fits, what a fantastic blast from the past! Great bands.

Newer bands I like from NZ are So So Modern and High Dependency Unit. So So Modern are So So Fucking Great! On Transgressive but sadly getting nowhere near as much press as you'd think from that, and they really deserve to get much more exposure.

Of course, there's Split Enz and Crowded House too, hahahahahaha

can't remember

which, but either the datsuns or wolfmother are from NZ aren't they?

and t'other ones from oz?

Wolfmother's from Oz

They're horrible

yeah

just looked it up.

datsuns are from NZ. they have one good album, even if everything else is destined to be crud.

wolfmother are pant yes. them and the vines were the others i was thinking of, but they are def from oz

I actually love The Datsuns

One of the best live bands I've ever seen.

I kind of feel sorry for them - they got lumped in with meatheads like Jet and The Darkness which fucked everything up for them.

The Datsuns had as much Ramones and NY Dolls in them as anything and covered The Misfits...The Darkness covered Van Halen.

BEST. VIDEO. EVER.

The nostalgia alone is overwhelming

ain't it just

i almost wish i'd been born there myself

Instead of

Scotland

AK79

One of my favourite records - a collection of singles and tracks by Auckland punk bands, circa 1979. Ace.

Semi-interesting anecdote alert

Someone I knew who worked at Slowboat Records in Wellington said Evan Dando came in asking for a copy of AK79 while he was touring there. Which made me like him just that little bit more

who?

my Cousins owns it.

*smug*

nah

i agree with you. whatever they are, they are much better than jet/darkness etc...

that first album is awesome such a brilliant rock album.

and live is good. but album #2 wasnt quite right. and as for number 3... well. ive still got the debut to listen to.

and

when they used to play small venues, i recall a story that phil (the guitarist?) used to stand on his amp while playing, looking down at a yellow smiley face sticker, with the words 'hello phil' underneath them so he would remember who he was from his drugs or something.

Theres a band from NZ that live in London now

The Sneaks, but they aren't particularly good. Also isn't Conan from Conan & The Mocasins a kiwi?

Unless he's replaced all the backing musicians since moving here

Conan & The Moccasins are from Wellington

"life begins at 40"

Dave and the Dynamos.

Best Kiwi song EVER!!!!!!!
