Glastonbury.
Jay Z getting stick, from many ignorant fans.
Whether you like hip hop or not Jay Z is a very adventurous choice and one that should be applauded from Glasto's perspective.
From my point of view, KOL, who i do love, have been on the festival scene in Britain for the past few years. The Verve do not appeal to me at all and are quite boring to me, even though at one point i did quite like them.
There's no doubt of Jay Z's significance within hip hop in the 21st Century and beyond. And he has a range of excellent hip hop songs, and a rarity it is to have not only him in the UK, but a rapping star in the major guitar based festival season.
Yes yes somebody has probably said this already but i don't care.
of course, Jay-Z is great
but i just don't think he's "headliner at Glasto" material
^
i dont particularly like Jay Z, but i do like other hip hop. The point is though, yes its adventurous, but surely in a headliner you want someone a lot of people want to see, rather than someone who some people want to see a lot.
if Jay Z was to headline a festival though
what would it be?
i like the idea of more hip hop artists playing more festivals. and not just lethal fucking bizzle
dizzee rascal is at reading
i just think for a festival type thing, he would be better slightly further down the bill.
ok fair enough
but surely not that much further down considering how successful he has been over the years for a mainstream audience.
Maybe the pyramid stage would have been better or something. Although i still like the idea of a non guitar based musician being headliner, especially as Glasto is supposed to be a bit quirky or whatever.
Yeah of course
but theyve gotta cater for their main audience, and i reckon for the most part the main audience would prefer someone different. Not that its a massive deal as its only one headliner.
Dizzee has been to Leeds/Reading
a few times. Think I've seen him twice there.
He was on the Leeds/Reading bill
A while ago, but I think he cannceld that. I didn't see him anyway.
I agree with you, for me he is a bigger draw than Kings Of Leon and The Verve. I'm not really a fan of any of the Glasto headliners mind I wouldn't rush to see Jay Z. but it would be interesting to see what he's like as he's damn big.
2003 line up if ya interested
http://www.readingfestival.com/history/index.aspx
bloody hell
theres a lot of shit on that 2003 line up
yeah thats maybe why
Jay Z canceled hehe
I dont even think
The White Stripes turned up that year either
Jack White
Smashed his finger up in a car accident before and BRMC replaced them.
ooo nasty
I vaugly remember that now
he cancelled
and was replaced by the Darkness...
So he has form for not turning up. I'm convinced he's going to pull out and just do wireless. Once tickets have sold out...
I was thinking that might happen
we will wait and see.
I think Jay-Z is a great idea
It's good to have someone different headlining such a big festival.
I personally think that Kings Of Leon are a boring choice. I've seen them live several times but they've never exactly set me on fire.
If a festival putting Jay-Z on
seems adventurous, then I don't think that festival is worthy of our time, debating-wise.
so probably the most mainstream massive festival of the year
isn't worth even discussing when it throws up a non standard festival headliner in terms of its previous headliners?
so instead we'll discuss luke pritchard and guitar pedals yes?
But thats my point
he's one of the biggest stars in popular music. Its not an adventurous choice at all, or at least it shouldn't be. I mean its not like Company Flow are headlining, is it?
calm down
all he's saying is that festival's are pretty damn boring nowadays, which they are...
Yh i agree it shouldn't be adventurous
but it is in the context of how popular (or not as it seems) the festival is. If you look at whose headlines the last few years and it is a more daring headliner, in the sense of genre and the fans that glasto normally attracts.
eh!
when there are loads of people around who are happy with listening to the same mediocre guitar bands who all think they have something different to say but are all saying the exact same thing. it is refreshing to see an act like Jay-Z headlining as these are the people snapping up the tickets.

funny
I'm doing that thing, you know when you stick your tongue in front of your teeth in your chin? What primary school children affectionately call 'Spaz Face'?
It's a good comeback. It's like mimmicking someone in a "mer mer mer mer mer" fashion...
...or just calling someone a Cunt and walking off.
he's easily the best headliner there this year.
it's just.. if you don't want to see him, don't? no one's forcing anyone to sit through him.
...
with all there festivals going on theres nearly not enough fill all the slots.
If you say you can't have played in the last 10 years, who else is gonna headline?
I think it's wicked, in fact it was one of the reasons why I bought my ticket. Not because I'm a massive hip-hop fan but becasue Im sick of going to see festivlas with variations of a new the band, a big the band and an old the band playing.
Also its border line racist some of the comments made about Jay-z headlning. Nothing obvious but a massive sentiment of white festivals of white folk, let the blacks have the notting hill carnival.
