Being untalented

Like probably many people on DiS, I like to think I have something of a creative streak. However I have absolutely no means of making anything of any musical worth because I can't play anything well and don't rate my voice too highly.

My question is this: How can you, with no real talent, create music that makes people sit up and take notice?

form a noise/drone/post rock band?

SOMEONE on here will like you, at least

i think you just need to develop real talent

or bullshit everyone

not that i recommend bullshitting everyone

cause i positively do not

...

Have massive tits.

put a bayonet on the end of your guitar

and threaten people with it.

use a sequencer

and a moog and a drum machine

whoops

forgot i wrote sequencer....just use a moog and a drum machine....

oh wait you wrote

"Sit up and take notice"....god knows how you get people to do that...loads of people don't even get that when they are talented

Production

Can you get all worked up about the properties of sounds and recording things in odd shaped rooms to make them sound different and all those sorts of things I know nothing about?

Alternatively, start a label, and imagine its output as what you would create if you were capable of doing so?

ps

blah blah blah, i'm sure you're not so untalented, *reassurance* and so on

i'm really not taking the piss though

just it was sort of afterthoughty and i don't actually know. but most people do tend to be too hard on themselves, and especially with this sort of question, i bet it's understated to some degree.

my freeking

problem is that im lazy. it takeS a lot to motivate myself.

I can sing and play guitar, i could work on that instead of BEING ONLINE.

i used to play cello and was pretty decent at it

despite being massively fucking lazy. i'd quite like to learn to play the guitar i bought about three years ago but since i just get patronised whenever i mention it to my friends who do play i can't really be bothered.

it was an all-boys school

SOMEBODY had to be a girl. wait. abandon reply?

don't learn how to play

just play....don't tell these friends of yours. i can play the guitar but dont tell people. mainly cos i can't play.

i have tried

i was rubbish. also i think it's out of tune.

i did have once have a wonderful time drunkenly playing distorted E chords over the top of Bright Eyes songs though. it was the last day in my old flat (I MISS THAT FLAT SO MUCH SNIFF SNIFF) and i took it off work to pack. i ran out of boxes at about 4pm so spent the next few hours abusing a bottle of vodka, and the guitar and a bunch of CDs were the only things not packed, and, well, one thing lead to another. It also wins for being the only time I'd ever made enough noise for a neighbour to ring my buzzer to complain \m/

yeah just seductively play your cello

you provocative gallic minx you.

i don't actually have a cello

i'm from luton, in 1992 you could buy about half a row of terraced houses there for what a cello cost.

it doesnt have to be music

but if it does, just make music that you think nobody will ever hear, and it will be honest and original.

then one day, you might have the confidence to let someone hear it.

then a few people might take notice.
