So, is there anyone who was never on Fania Records that's worth checking out?

Fania related stuff is easy to track down but I've no idea about anything else and surely that's like getting into soul without knowing anything that wasn't on Stax.

For people that know shit all about salsa, go here: http://faniarecords.com/fania/site/home.aspx

and here for a little mix of some cool shit: http://o-dub.com/sounds/soulsides/fania3.mp3

And look at salsa album covers too, because they're always brilliant.

I've always wanted to see Nuestra Cosa

but have been limited to select youtube clips. I have the repackaged Celia Cruz and Fania DVD which is ace though.

i've not seen any of the DVDs...

they're worth the money then, i take it?

the Fania All-Stars only ever played one UK date. how grim is that? :(

Fairly grim

but I dont think we'd have really 'gotten it' over here.

The Celia Cruz/Fania in Africa DVD is ace and it's fairly cheaply made so you can get it for a fiver or so. The clips I've seen of Nuestra Cosa make it look like the greatest thing ever.

i'll get that if i see it

i love watching live footage of soul and jazz and the like, but there's so little good stuff recorded from back then...

Not sure

were Gipsy Kings on Fania?

Or are they to salsa what UB40 are to reggae?

i've not heard of them...

they might be. my knowledge of salsa begins and ends with the stuff that Puerto Rican gang members made in the 60s and 70s really. which was pretty much all on Fania. i've not come yet across anyone major that DIDN'T have something to do with Fania at some point. it's all getting reissued and that now, dunno if Fania's been resurrected or whether it's all licensed but there's been a Gilles Peterson mix and one by DJ Format and there's a new one coming soon too.

it's a bit like trying to swim before i can walk though...

ahhhh...the gypsy kings

the soundtrack to seedy holiday resorts! they did perhaps the best cover of hotel california EVER.
