Jesus christ, I'm just listening to this record for the first time. I feel like I'm having a nightmare. They're like a shit version of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah except with really grating, overtly British yelping over the top (woeful lyrics too).

noooooo
!
I'm sorry
:(
haha
no need to apologise, i just like them. and good live too.
well
I find them boring - and god awful live!
oh good another thread on them
YAY :D
yay indeed !
Each to their own, I suppose.
I love both them and their lyrics.
uhm
how are they like CYHSY? i don't quite see that.
^this
Ah c'mon
They share quite a lot of musical characteristics.
Taut, jangly, midly lo-fi guitar sound; yelpy vocals; major-key, happy-go-lucky melodies & hooks played in between vocal passages; repetetive, driving, hi-hat reliant 4/4 beats.... not that I actually took out a notebook and jotted down these details as I was listening, I just got a similar vibe from this record as I did the first CYHSY album, except I quite like that one.
I think I'm just getting a bit parochial and anti-British at the moment, in terms of hearing it in singer's accents, after being saturated in Yoofmovies, Foals et al as of late. And the music is just too... too shamelessly "BOUNCY" or something. And the lyrics are silly. I said that already. Maybe I'm just a bitter cunt.
Lo-fi?
Have you heard the production job on this record?
i wouldn't really call them jangly either. And i wouldn't say that playing something with a hi-hat in 4/4 time is a characteristic i'd immediately relate to CYHSY.
Plus i'd say they sing in quite Americanised accents...they are quite in thrall to the Stateside riot-grrl lot.
M: An argument isn't just contradiction.
A: It can be.
M: No it can't. An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.
A: No it isn't.
M: Yes it is! It's not just contradiction.
A: Look, if I argue with you, I must take up a contrary position.
M: Yes, but that's not just saying 'No it isn't.'
A: Yes it is!
M: No it isn't!
So i'm right then?
No
Your post was just made up of misinterpretations (deliberate or otherwise) of what I said, or just outright contradictions :)
contradictions
because you were wrong. i see.
Strange
I watched that episode this morning.
No you didn't
It's just a bit of harmless fun
its alright to listen to them
isn't it?
took your bloody time
but I like them and it took a couple of listens to get used to the record I found.
Took his time?
...
rabble rabble rabble
i heard one of their songs once. It sounded like P!ATD
rabble rabble rabble rabble rabble rabble rabble rabble rabble
Los Camps! ...the new Neil Diamond??
love 'em or hate 'em, I guess.
No, it's ok
you're right. They're shite
it's a horribly overused term i know, but it's a grower.
Listen to it a few times over the coming weeks and there's a good chance you might change your mind.
I absolutely love
Los Campesinos! they're so much fun to listen to and such awesome peoople, my favourite new band i've heard in a long time!
ya, if you like crap
bwhahahahaaaa
This thread should be deleted
sure, everyone is entitled to their own opinion but some people are just simply wrong!
i can see why some people might not like it.
it could be too poppy, or just far to excitable for some people's tastes.
See
I like some pretty darn poppy music, but it's the "excitable" bit that gets me I think, I am literally getting images in my head of people jumping around the set of a children's TV show singing these songs through wireless headset microphones.
.
some people are just not fun enough to appreciate Los Campesinos. Of course they are not the next amazing thought-provoking band, but they are fun to dance to, they have the ability to put a big happy grin on your face and they are a bit of fun.
gareth has a new account i see
I really like them,
in a jangly, slightly twee kind of way. They are a lot of fun to listen to and good to dance about to as well.
Nah
They're good.
Now where's my Mo-Ho album ?
Shutupshutup
Who cares? Whether you like them or not, they are one of a current bunch of a fantastic new antidote for all these yawnsome, super-serious jing jang joe guitar bands and that should be enough of a reason to warrant a celebration of this band's existence.
Just today i saw Editors playing on The Culture Show and it made me want to throw myself in The Clyde. God bless the band Los Campesinos for having a sense of humour, a sense of fun and for making absolute puff like Editors vanish from my mind for long enough to stop myself drowning my brain.
Well you cared enough
To give me the sort of response I was looking for: an insight into what people see in them. Which is cool.
I don't buy into the whole "antidote" thing tho; good music is a reason to celebrate a band's existence, not the fact that they aren't as shit as Editors :D
Yeah
But i was giving someone who doesn't like them a reason to not bring them up in a negative way on the boards. I personally love them (and their music).
I like the album but that's a pretty silly argument
I mean the "whether you like them or not, they are one of a current bunch of a fantastic new antidote"...
Surely if you don't like them you won't care what they're the antidote to? This reminds of that Foals thread where Crablin said something along the lines of "whether you like them or not you have to be pleased they're putting good, original music in the charts" which completely ignored that people who don't like them won't find the music good or original and therefore won't be pleased.
So, anyway, I suppose what I'm saying is I like the Los Campesnnos! album but the suggestion that someone who doesn't like them shouldn't be negative is nonsensical.
It's only fair and appropriate people offer their opinions, good or bad, on any music they so choose to do so to.
this probably doesn't make any difference to the argument
but the vinyl for the album is orange and his etchings on it.
and a big ol' poster.
and it cost me £10
its things like that which help me appreciate bands, when they put time and effort into everything about themselves, not just the music.
hats off to them i say.
Fair enough
I've made my thoughts known. Now lets unite, Los Campesinos lovers and haters alike, and deride Jack Penate, my pet hate, the sub-Shakin Stevens, noncy-dancer, 80s-traveller-who-does-a-dodgy-job-on-your-tarmac-styled, nauseating-estuary-accented smug fucker.
i agree
i just don't feel all this love either.
the vocals are so suffocatingly self-conscious, they have irritating lyrics, and pretty grating musically. i can barely sit through a song of theirs, let alone an album.
call me a cynical old bastard but i'm only 19.
i really like the sound
but that mans voice... uck!
The girl sounds lovely but he should really shut up!
i like it
but the lyrics are terrible, i have to avoid consciously following the lyrics
Are they acually a band?
here's me thinking they were simply some label scouts masturbatory fantasy.
okay, i'm going to listen to this album tomorrow
and if i have a strong opinion, i will post a thread, AND THAT WILL BE THAT
i'm so sick of hearing about this band. Elbow, possibly the band of (only) the 2000s (in terms of albums) have an album out in just over a week, we should all be looking forward to that. okay?
Am I going to be forced to start a Jack Penate hate thread?
We should all be giving our love to Bill Callahan.
HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHA
WRONG.
:|
lol
i love this album more than
just about anything in the WHOLE WORLD right now.
Read the album review in The Stool Pigeon?
I agree!
lol

and jim noir gets 4 pigeons out of 5
this world is bizzare.
x
the hot chip review is amazing.
Eddie The Eagle References are the best thing ever.
short, concise, and very much to the point
i concur
...
I don't think they sound a lot like CYHSY. More like Architecture in Helsinki meets The Boy Least Likely To.
I quite like them, although the male vocalist can be a bit annoying at times
.
i have to admit i bought the album yesterday based purely on the fact that i kept hearing about them on here. and it has a pretty cool cover.
but i love it. i have listened to it through about 4 or 5 times. it just makes me feel all happy i guess, i don't know how to describe it. it's just a solid album, and i like all the songs. definitely one of the releases of the year so far, and fully deserving of its 9/10 in my opinion.
i don't know anything about them as people but people keep saying they are the nicest band ever, so good luck to them i say.
i can see why some people might not be into it, but i think as someone said it is a refresing alternative to a lot of stuff out there.
it just started again as i type. i have no need to turn it off. i think this is a good sign with an album, particularly an album by a band i knew pretty much nothing about yesterday.
nothing like cyhsy! though. except for the ! at the end of their name, thinking about it...
They're atrocious
and appalling. Abysmal, astronomically awful. They rank way down there with Scouting For Girls, Babyshambles and The Enemy as a potent display of the worst that British music has to offer. But hey, they read Pitchfork so they gotta be one of the good guys. Their only redeeming point is that they get no airplay on the popular radio stations, hence no forcible exposure like the aforementioned bands. And when an album can barely chart in the top 75 then you know you're safe, at least for the little while.
Agreed
^^^
^ This
I just don't get the hype.
^^ Could not agree more
Quite why people like them because of their sense of 'fun' is beyond me, when the lead singer appears to be the biggest, joyless elitist cunt this side of Pitchfork. I'd much rather have fun listening to inclusive music cheers.
hold up
i really dont see los campesinos as a british band. i mean, technically yes, but in their attitude, and influence, and sound...they're way more north american. those 3 bands you just slated are so quintessentially english, for me they represent everything i hate about english guitar music....but los camp are a million miles off that. perhaps you're saying you just dislike them equally to these bands, which i get, but for me i dont even see them on that scale. i think they're fucking cool, and at times their music isn't entirely my thing but i think they stand apart from a huge amount of english music, i actually see them in the same light as biffy or foals...not in sound but because they're really coming from such a different angle to most other music on these shores. and i say hats off to that.
sx
I got tired of them quickly
Its true. I loved the EP and the songs seemed to of changed slightly for the album and blah i dunno maybe i will pick them up again in a few months.
you are
wrong.
come to hoxton bar & grill gig. We'll show you how to have a good time! A YEAR IN BLISS. (obviously you won't get our inside jokes, but you can sing and dance along with us. Good times, good good times.
This thread reminds me...
I think we need another Foals thread.
^ Wins the thread
Everyone please stop saying why you don't like really good music thats gone popular, its an embarrassment for all involved.
Thanks!
LC! are hardly popular
I don't think anyone's dislike of them is based on their popularity whatsoever
Number 73 in the album charts wasn't it?
That's not bad but they're hardly Busted...
I imagine it's just more people have heard them and had a chance to comment now. I've never been convinced there's this massload of people who dislike things once they become popular - I think its just they get exposed to a wider audience so more people get to hear it and naturally some of them dislike it.
I do get a bit pissed off at times by the parochialism of these boards - I mean there's nothing wrong with someone saying "I don't like something and here's why" and there's nothing wrong with someone then saying "well actually I do like them and here's why" but the suggestion that it's "embarrassing" for someone to be negative about a paricular band or, as someone else said above, "even if you don't like them, you shouldn't talk about them in a negative way on the boards" is ridiculous. Everyone's got a right to like or dislike things and the idea there should be certain sacred cows who are immune to criticism on DiS is almost as annoying as people who try to find motives (such as that it's because they've become 'popular') to 'explain' why someone doesn't like something they like. Maybe they just don't like it?
Nah, the lyrics are what got me into them
I was pretty "meh" about them till I got the album. It's very enjoyable and the lyrics are really good.
7.9/10
From what I've heard of them...
.. I don't understand the hype. It's horribly twee. But I hate jangly guitars and most indie-pop, so it was a given I was never going to 'get' it.

I find the album fun to listen to and enjoyable.
A lot of the songs are very good indie-pop songs although I tend to find that the songs I don't like (a Year in Lists, We Roll Our Eyes And Exhale and maybe a couple of others), I really, really don't like. But then "Broken Hearts Sound Like Breakbeats" and "Kneedeep at ATP" I really do like.
Anyway it's a 7.5/10 album for me. It's not the "best debut album since Tigermilk" as DiS said, and the lyrics are clunky in places, but where it's good I think it's very, very good.
But at the same time I can completely see why if you didn't like it you'd hate it...
The album has grown on me even more
I'm not a big fan of some of the guitar, but the rest is brilliant.
I have an opinion on this band
Take it to the Lipster, sister!
there will be
a song on the next album called 'Los Campesinos - ARGH' and it will be about this thread.
I got the record
it's just so samey and boring. Just a one trick pony lacking any sort of depth musically and lyrically. It's probably great if you're in your late teens and into energetic dancing but I'm a miserable old cunt so not for me.
At least they know how to use the boards
i have to admit.
I bought this at the weekend. So far two people I live with have asked me either to turn it down or turn it off. I'm not really enjoying it either.
So I'm quite disappointed.
I wonder if I would've liked this album
if it wasn't for the production/mastering. It hurts my ears.
