Songdog

Easily the best so far...

I second

the Los Campesinos notion. Just brilliant.

The Mars Volta

for me.

The Ruby Suns

The December Sound
Forward Russia
British Sea Power

yes - The Ruby Suns, by far.

Also agree with British Sea Power.
MGMT and Devotchka are my two other picks.

Hell yeah!

Also:

Vampire Weekend and Evangelicals.

and that High Places collection is weak. Her vocals are boring and inconclusive and the music is a poor Animal Collective rip-off.

^this

and lc!

the mountain goats

and bon iver, although that was technically last year, i think.

^

Silje Nes
Foals
Vampire Weekend
Los Campesinos!
Crystal Castles
Pete & the Pirates

Silje Nes was last year

only by a few weeks though, granted.

indeed !

but it's still ace !

Neon Neon

Stainless Style

Cass McCombs - Dropping The Writ

oh...and One More Grain - Isle Of Grain of course

Stainless Style is going to be fabulous.

I've only tasted Dream Cars so far and it has pitched a tent in my head and doesn't look like it's going to move out any time soon.

good shout

outstanding album

oh, and Youthmovies annnd Clark..maybe Foals

Magnetic Fields

Though I havn't got Los Campesinos yet, and I'll probably have Elbow listed as soon as it comes out and I hear it.

los campesinos?

really?

i must be missing something. i really wanted to like it but it sounded...thin and weedy.

Yeah yeah

It made me remember a phrase from a late 90s NME Fierce Panda compilation review: "No marks indie-schmindie for real losers".

there's the title of a fierce panda biog if ever i heard one...

or eulogy, for that matter...

I agree

The songs are great, I just wish it had a bit more crunch. It's a real 6-7/10 for me, think it tends to lack variety as well.

When you I saw them live, whole different story mind. They are a lot lot more punky and loud. Which is incredible.

The Mae Shi - HLLLYH

Earth - The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull

The Vincent Vincent and the Villains album is pretty good too.

i kinda

wish the mae shi were still noisy...

Los Campesinos!

Fosca
Mountain Goats
Vampire Weekend
British Sea Power

British Sea Power

Los Campesinos
Magnetic Fields
Stephen Malkmus

yes

ruby suns
frightened rabbit
forward russia

I've only heard

Why? and ASMZ. Both are pretty awesome.

I'm not sure anything else interests me at the moment... someone inspire me!

Evangelicals or Earth

because they're the only 2 albums i've heard

Are mini-albums allowed?

cos Lets Wrestle 'In Loving Memory of...' is my pick of 08 thus far....

Times New Viking - Rip It Off

Hold On... is a solid debut though, as is Vampire Weekend.

You need eardrums of steel to listen to Rip It Off from start to finish tho'.

Yes to the Mountain Goats

Am I the only one giving love out to Cat Power's Jukebox record? I LOVE her voice and that new version of Metal heart is worth the price alone.

This Mountain Goats one

is doing nothing for me. Will listen again tommorrow

Evangelicals

Destroyer - Trouble In Dream

(I'm about to check out Clinic/Do It! ...I've high hopes here.)

LC!

I Was A Cub Scout
Laura Marling

Probably Foals & The Long Blondes too once I've lived with them for abit.

agree

with many of them on here and will take some suggestions from others. mine currntly are:
vampire weekend
los campesinos
magnetic fields
mountain goats

Cryptacize - Dig That Treasure

Rings - Black Habit

Lightspeed Champion

Falling Off The Lavender Bridge

.

that is all

CAT POWER!!!

c'mon people

She covers Nick Cave!

What more do you want? Blood? DO you want blood? do you?

hmm

Nick Cave by a fucking country mile.

Mars Volta was also pretty accomplished.

I'm hoping Foals is going to blow my mind. I like brass, I like Dave sitek, I like scratchy guitars and I think I might like the album a whole lot, despite all the hate on here.

...

Genghis Tron - Board Up The House
Meshuggah - obZen

Atm not including Fuck buttons,

Youthmovies,Foals, Forward Russia and Mystery Jets since i havnt heard them yet.
Beach House-Devotion
British Sea Power- Do you like Rock music
Vampire Weekend-S/t
Charlottefield-what friends are for
Hot Chip-made in the dark
Cadence Weapon-afterparty babies
los campesinos-hold on now youngster...
Laura Marling-Alas i cannot swim
These New Puritans-Beat Pyramid

I second

These New Puritans&
Cadence Weapon

oh shit and

Earth as well. That's a lovely album.

Nine Inch Nails

Laura Marling

...

British Sea Power - DYLRM
School Of Language - Sea From Shore

Lupen Crook

& The Murderbirds - Iscariot the Ladder

Los camp

BSP
xiu xiu

are the only albums i've bought this year, from this year

BSP

and Charlottefield - and i still havent heard all of the latter yet. but i fecking love it

imho

Youthmovies, Destroyer, Why?, British Sea Power and maybe even Elbow.

ruby suns

.

Fuck Buttons

Vampire Weekend
Nick Cave
You're All smiling now but we'll all turn into demons (when its complete)
did i mention Fuck Buttons?

Born Ruffians

Earth
Mae Shi
The Field EP (if that counts, it's an hour long at least)
Times New Viking
Al Kent presents The Million Dollar Orchestra (amazing new disco album, sounds like it was recorded in NYC in 1977)

have not heard those mentioned but..

"Go Away White" (the new Bauhaus) is decent.

i'm sure the mystery jets album will be very strong

and i've not heard NIN or Youthmovies yet. I've not given the Autechre or Crystal Castles enough time but i like them so far.

Anyway

Foals
These New Puritans

is it just me

or has anybody else just felt a bit disinterested with almost everything that's been released this year? I can't think of many things where i've thought "wow, i really should check this out"

Is it just the end of year/awards & lists centric release schedules? Maybe you're all just really rubbish at selling me stuff

also

how many albums have people actually heard from this year? And have you heard them or "heard" them?

it would seem i've not heard anything

apart from "it's too late t'pologise...it's too late" by one republic....is it march? i haven't heard anything new?

Los Campesinos, High Places

cant wait for a "proper" release from High Places, they're amazing!

you've heard Born Ruffians.

or at least i TOLD YOU to go to their myspace to hear how the new songs are way sadder...

wrong band or song

you're thinking of "stop and stare". "T'apologise" is Timbaland.

...

I've bought the new Earth, Atlas Sound, Black Mountain, Bon Iver, Beach House albums. I really like them all, having listened to them a minimum of about 5 times (in the case of Beach House which only arrived t'other day) and innumerable times (in the case of Earth and Atlas Sound).

I'm currently waiting for Fuck Buttons and Boris on preorder. I also wanna hear TNV and Autechre.

Having listened to the new Cloudland Canyon on Boomkat a couple of times through, that also sounds incredible.

TNP

Foals
Fuck Buttons
iForward, Russia!
BSP
VW

hopefully will add youthmovies once i hear it.

The debut album from She and Him

is my favourite so far.
It's Hollywood's Zooey Deschanel and M Ward sounding like a cross between Jenny lewis's "Rabbit fur coat" album and The Carpenters and Linda Ronstadt.

These

The Envy Corps - Dwell
Vampire Weekend
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
Nada Surf - Lucky
Marah - Angels Of Destruction
The Ruby Suns - Sea Lion
British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?

Cloud Cult, by several miles

Then the new Destroyer, Nick Cave, Beach House and Mountain Goats efforts.

Gutter twins

Saturnalia

I've only heard 3 albums released this year.

*The Bedlam In Goliath - The Mars Volta (very good)

*In The Future - Black Mountain (sounds decent so far but haven't really played it enough yet)

*The Bees Made Honey In The Lions Skull - Earth (played it once, got through 3 songs, turned it off).

I've pre-ordered the Foals and Youthmovies albums and I'm getting the latest Charlottefield album this weekend. Hopefully I can add these soon.

In conclusion The Mars Volta's new album is the only one I've really listened to properly from this year. I've been catching up on older stuff mainly.

yeah im the same

except only the mars volta i think.i cant wait for youthmovies to arrive.i dont like being in work this early.i know its not EARLY but still

I nearly made the same mistake with Earth.

But then I watched No Country For Old Men and it suddenly made sense. I really like it now.

why the fuck would you

turn a new album off after three songs? whatever happened to giving an album time to grow?

Well I wanted to listen to other things that I hadn't got into yet.

Anyway in my experience, if I don't like an album then I give it time. (I had Frances The Mute for 2 years before I "got it"). If an album is simply boring then I do tend to dismiss it, although I'm sure I will give it another go however (all the way through, this time).

fair enough

i'm just not sure you can dismiss an album as boring having listened to less than half of it, once.

The Mars Volta - The Bedlam In Goliath

Xiu Xiu - Women As Lovers

Cadence Weapon - Afterparty Babies

Minus - The Great Northern Whalekill

You've reminded me.

Xiu Xiu - Knife Play. You love that album right, what is it like?
I have The Air Force but I've always felt it's a good album but that it had the potential to be a lot better, I prefer the noisy songs, some of the quieter tracks sound a little weak.

Knife Play

is amazing. I've only heard it and Women As Lovers, but the former is alot more experimental. Alot of genre-splicing (classical, electronic) as well as the mandatory noise. I think it's the most refined their sound has been. I'm the same with Women As Lovers as you are with The Air Force, but Knife Play is something else

For me

Mars Volta
BSP
IWACS
Angus and Julia Stone

I was a bit disappointed with

IWACS after a few really good tracks on their myspace, the album just didnt do it for me.

Boris - Smile

...

Haven't heard it yet

However, I cannot wait till it hits our shores. The single is ridiculous. RI-DIC-U-LOUS.

Been a good start to 2008

Black Mountain - In The Future
Hot Chip - Made In The Dark
Foals - Antidotes
The Mae Shi - HLLLYH
Pete and the Pirates - Little Death
Los Campesinos! - Hold On...
Blood on the Wall - Liferz
Times New Viking - Rip It Off

I am aware

of how crushingly uncool this suggestion is, but I've really enjoyed the Sons and Daughters record. That is all.

For me

'Pershing' by Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin is really gonna take some beating..pushed all the way so far by Vampire Weekend,Times New Viking and Born Ruffians.

Mmmmm

If I had to do a secondary list, Sons and Daughters would be on it, and Magnetic Fields, These New Puritans, British Sea Power, Atlas Sound.

are sons and daughters uncool?

oh well... motion seconded.

Forward Russia

los campesinos,
Why,
Laura Marling,
Foals,

reckon after a few more listens crystal castles could be up there as well

no sir

there are two of us

I think you're one of the only people that's heard it

Didn't it only come out on Monday?

well...

I really like Afterparty Babies by Cadence Weapon.

Erm...basically I'm waiting for the new Down I Go album and The Night Marchers to release their debut. Plus, the live RFTC album looks/sounds amazing. Can't wait to get that.

DOWN I GO

So many babies to kill and so little time.

Laura Marling

by a country mile.

Plants and Animals - Parc Avenue

This amazing album is out at the end of the month in the UK.

Nothing truly awesome yet

although Nick Cave and Vampire Weekend have their moments. The Los Camp album is so poorly produced that it just sounds like a throwaway - I know that is part of their charm, but it's irritating.

I'm looking forward to the Indelicates, Charlie Everywhere and Killola albums though.

Have any of you...

..heard this album:

{{{Sunset}}} - Bright Blue Dream

I've just heard it the once, but when I heard it I got the impression that I was listening to a new Vampire Weekend/Clap your hands type band - not in sound, but I get the feeling they could be big.

i have not

and i shan't, if they sound like CYHSY or VW

^This.

So very true. :)

medulla

try reading, it's a useful skill.

"not in sound, but I get the feeling they could be big."

is a key phrase that you missed.

Charlottefield

Earth
Minus

Charlottefield album.

What's it like, I'm getting it this weekend. I've never heard them before they just sounded interesting from what I've heard about them.

It's loud and angular

but not angular and sounding brittle, which I find a lot of bands at the moment have a tendency to do on record. The productions pretty lo-fi, but it comes good.

^ Minus

is a-rocking

Need more rocking albums this year

rather than twindie-bindippers.

Any recommendations?

I've not really

bought much 2008 music this year; i've been exploring 1996 - 2007 with my CD purchases.

I will, however, suggest you go see Minus this month on tour.

I think I found

my fave so far this year, this week. You might want to check out Blank Dogs - On Two Sides.

I'll keep an eye out

what's it like?

So far

Mars Volta - The Bedlam in Goliath (Just astounding)
BSP - DYLRM (great record, shame about the title)
The Gutter Twins - Saturnalia (only given it one listen but it's Lanegan & Dulli, what's not to like?!)

Atlas Sound

Earth
Vampire Weekend
Cass McCombs (although I think it dropped in the US in 2007)

a bit early to have this thread?

sorry ask me this question again in about three months. Nothing truly great has come out yet this year but I do like Pete and The Pirates and The Gutter Twins. Whats all of this loving of Vampire Weekend and bigging it up as album of the year - they are distinctly average and no one will care ten years from now....

a) It's asking for the best album of the last 2 months

so it's not really too early,
and b) judging a band by whether you think they'll be remembered is missing the point.

That said, VW are dull as it gets, yes. But I'll write myself a memo to ask you again in three months anyway. k?

You Say Party! We Say Die!

OK, so it's a little canadian 'hair-slides and keyboards'... but I've played it more times than anything else this year.

Oh, another vote for Los Campesinos here too..

THE MAE SHI!

closely followed by Vampire Weekend and Cadence Weapon..

adored the first album but not feeling the new Forward Russia album yet.. toooo.. ostentatiously epic??

I think it's great - much much better than the first

But I've had ages to get into it.

Real grower.

Agree

About LC!.

I also love the Hot Chip album.

But the British Sea Power... aargh. I really tried to like it, but I can only rate it as mediocre at best. It's not exactly bad, but then it's certainly not good either.

from what ive heard so far

iwacs - i want you to know...
mars volta - goliath
these new puritans - beat pyramid

Ermmmm

It's not quite out yet but I predict the 'Hercules and the Love Affair' album to be pretty special.

Atlas Sound

should be added to Evangelicals, Destroyer in previous post.

BRITISH SEA POWER.

hands down.

Oi Oi

Atlas Sound
School Of Language
Clark
Why?
Meshuggah
Earth
The Big Sleep

Fuck Buttons

Dengue Fever, eh?

I've got their s/t debut, and it's great. Are they still doing basically the same stuff?

Essentially

Return To Dragon House is better but the new album is great apart from the occasional "comedy moment", i.e. Sober Driver.

for me:

los campesinos
these new puritans
one more grain
british sea power
lightspeed champion
hot chip
xiu xiu
atlas sound
envelopes
let's wrestle (EP but great)

not heard

fuck buttons or xiu xiu or atlas sound
need to though
my faves have been
los campinos
get cape wear get cape fly

Get Cape?

Really? I thought it was the most boring album ive heard in a long time.

Obviously... and in no particular order..

Why? - Alopecia
Destroyer - Trouble in Dreams
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Atlas Sound - Let the blind lead those who can see but cannot feel
Fleet Foxes - Sun Giant EP
Lykke Li - Youth Novels

Do you know the Fleet Foxes..

have an album to follow Sun Giant, it's called Ragged Wood.

This information may or may not be useful to you.

that is useful...

i didnt know that, shame on me for saying it, but i found fleet foxes off of p4k's best new music page. i know, i know...

I'd just like to add in Elle Milano's debut

Acres of Dead Space Cadets

Something that has n't disappointed despite a long wait.

Stephen Malkmus

for me so far by a mile. Love it!

So far for me

just The Kills - Midnight Boom

Haven't liked much else

* I've just listened to the Sleeping Years record.

We might aswell stop this thread now, it's by far the best record of the year so far. Simply stunning, really. Any less than 9/10 would be doing it a diservice.

Earth!!

umm...nothing else has really impressed me this year yet....

Laura Marling????

Jesus wept.

Beach House - Devotion

That's the only album that has really exicited me

British Sea Power was OKAY,I like a few songs on it.

So far it's been a pretty boring year in music.

looking at my play counts...

and careful thought, these are my favourites in order:

1. Los Campesinos - Hold on now, youngster
2. Mystery Jets - 21
3. Lightspeed Champion - Falling off the lavender bridge
4. Hot Chip - Made in the dark
5. I Was A Cub Scout - I want you to know...
6. Does It Offend You, Yeah? - You have no idea...

Foals

What an impressive debut, they certainly lived up to the hype.

other than the masterpeice that is 'Antidotes'

Xiu Xiu - Women As Lovers
Devotchka - A Mad & Faithful Telling
Los Campesinos! - Hold On Now, Youngster
I Was A Cub Scout - I Want You To Know That Theres Always Hope

Not a bad year so far!

dig, lazarus dig!!!

easily

.

Have A Nice Life - Deathconsciousness.

Easily.

The Boats -Our Small Ideas

yum

Why? - Alopecia

Another

Hot Chip - Made In The Dark

I love the breadth and diversity of this LP - talented bastards that they are...

Magnetic Fields-Disortion

Atlas Sound-Let the blind...
Beach House-Devotion

Special praise goes to The Helio Sequence's 'Keep your eyes ahead', which I can't stop listening to.

**

Foals - Antidotes
This will destroy you
MGMT - Oracular spectacular
NIN - Ghosts I-IV
Alec Empire Golden foretaste of heaven
Miss Kittin - Bat box

el guincho/ atlas sound

also maybe john maus, perhaps vampire weekend- still haven't checked out ruby suns and evangelicals yet!

theres still

so many albums i need to check out

FORWARD RUSSIA

born ruffians
we are scientists
tokyo police club
vampire weekend
crystal castles

biggest letdown, probably:
Foals.

For me..

Field Manual by Chris Walla
Devotion by Beach House

Also listening to lots of The Con by Tegan & Sara, but it's been out a while here in my adoptive home.
