What album do you love now but hated at first?

"Mirrored", no wait, I still hate that one.

"Turn On The Bright Lights" I still can't believe it and I'm still embarassed about it but on first listen I dismissed it as too repetative (one of the descriptions used by most people who dismiss the music I listen to). But on second listen I knew it was brilliant.

the memory of most of these strggles to appreciate genius music now escapes me but I know there have been many; because once I realized I was capable of ignoring truly great music I became more patient.

I have been struggling for over fifteen years to like John Zorn, actually I have not tried in a long time, but I think I'll try "Execution Ground" one last time today.

Clap your hands say yeah's

first, self titled album is now a firm fave for me..

Biffy Clyro - Vertigo of Bliss

Thought it was a major disappointment compared to Blackened Sky when it came out. Persevered with it and now I can confidently say it's my second favourite album ever.

Recently, Hot Chip - Made In The Dark has grown an awful lot on me.

^^

I've been listening to vertigo of bliss non-stop the past couple of days, great album.

Completely agree

with the Clap Your Hands comment.

Listened to it for the first time in a couple of years the other week and was amazed.

Apart from the first song, obviously, which was still shit.

sound of silver

by lcd soundsystem.

all my friends > most songs.

Panda Bear - Person Pitch

Amiina - Kurr

(i've posted this in both threads for some reason)

Most of my favourite albums

Tool - Lateralus
Fantomas -Directors Cut
Animal Collective - Feels
Digitalism - Idealism
LCD Soundsystem - Sound Of Silver
Sonic Youth - Dirty
Scott Walker - Songs For Jacques Brel

^ Fantomas yet to click with me

and i'm really curious to hear Digitalism. Care to describe? Also Simian Mobile Disco? There were some recommendations made by friends

Digitalism are...

a bit like a live version of Daft Punk- more guitars, vocals, live drums etc. The album is really good, although I bought it having never really listened to that sort of stuff, so it took a while to adjust to it. Simian Mobile Disco are from the same family as Digitalism, only a bit more techno/house orientated. Well, I think so anyway.

^ cheers

they all came out around the same time as Justice; wasn't sure if SMD were a bit more chart-house though, so gave it a miss. I may investigate, though

I'd say SMD are better than Justice

I've never quite understood the hype around Justice. I like them but they're hardly ground breaking.

^ i agree with you there

but Waters of Nazareth makes my hair stand on end with how damn good it is

That's one of the better tracks

But overall, it's nothing special. You should listen to Erol Alkan's remix of Waters Of Nazareth if you haven't already.

I have not but i shall

and i shall dance

and Phantom

that's bloody ace!

medulla

Fantomas "Director's Cut" is a no brainer, I promise you'll intantly love it!

Sonic Youth

I'm still out on "Dirty", listend to it on saturday- nope. I've owned a copy since day one.

Frances The Mute by The Mars Volta.

I completely dismissed it and didn't listen to it for over a year, then gave it another chance one day when I was in a bit of a random mood, now it's my 19th favourite album ever. (According to my "Rank your favourite albums thread", anyway).

Dirty

is terrible, I couldnt agree more, Kim Gorden choking her way through the songs. I just cant get in to it. Francis the Mute is a cracker tho.

...

Wish Fulfillment
Youth Against Fascism
On the Strip

are all great songs...Gordon "chokes" (not as in fail) more on other albums (Washing Machine?)

I think it's safe to say that I was young.

It confused the hell out of me, I thought what's the point in this, what are they doing, it sounds so random, ahhhhh. As my music taste changed I felt it deserved a second chance, then I couldn't understand my initial reaction to it. It's funny how your ears seem to change as you grow up.

^ definitely this

There are so mnay CDs in my collection now that i used to own but returned because i hated them, but in subsequent years recognised them as being amazing and re-purchased.

I'm waiting for this to happen with the Holy Fuck album i bought and returned a few weeks ago; perhaps when i'm 26 i'll scout for it again

I did that with DEP 'Calculating Infinity'

I thought it was fucking awful so I took it back. I then saw them at Reading, thought were one of the best acts of the festival and bought it again. No regrets.

^ the exact same i was thinking of

when i wrote that reply

Spooky...

Why bother taking albums back then.

I wouldn't bother, you never know how your music taste might change.

For an exchange

or a refund to get something i desire more at the time

The White Album

erm...old school example. I always avoided it because it sounded like a medley to me - 'Polythene Pam' and 'She Came in Through the Bathroom Window'. Now I realise I was wroooorng.

Rage Against the Machine's first album

My friend Geoffrey insisted I'd love it. I hated it. Years later, he's been proved absolutely right. I do love it. Cos it's amazing.

you have a friend called Geoffrey?

That's awesome!

left & leaving and reconstruction site

by the weakerthans.
i used to mock my brother for listening to such a wussy band quite a lot when i was more metal inclined but this past month or so i've been completely turned around and now think these are brilliant albums

ok computer

....honestly i didn't get it when i first listened to it. i absolutely hated the video for paranoid android. kharma police hooked me on it about 2 years later.

Slanted and Enchanted, believe it or not

I must have been about 16 when I bought it and I just didn't get what the fuss was about at all. I suppose it didn't help that I got the deluxe version having never really heard Pavement before, and I couldn't really make sense of it.

Needless to say, it's now one of my favourite albums and one which (eventually) helped me get properly into music.

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE - SUNG TONGS

didnt use to like them at all. im still not a fan of their Here comes the Indian style work, but the acoustic jams on this record are ace.
I didnt totally hate this record first time, but i only liked the poppy songs on it and not the others.
now i love it more than its possible to love anything

i hated clap your hands

and still do.

My Bloody Valentine

Loveless.

This was back in the days of Cassettes...

I was convinced the tape was fucked. I could never relax and get into it - I kept twiddling with my stereo - starting and stopping it.

I happened to hear it on CD and as soon as I got into 'It's SUPPOSED to sound like that' I loved it

Meltdown and Nuclear Sounds

by Ash. I thought Meltdown was just a dumb attempt at something approaching heavy metal, but then uncovered loads of addictive hooks.

Nuclear Sounds I listened to once and hated, I thought it was irredeemably bad, just noise. I like it a lot now, and Projects is one of my favourite Ash songs.

Exactly what I was going to say.

Thought it was intensely dull initially.

enter the 36 chambers

cant remember why- i was probably being a twat about it i.e. loads of my mates liked it so i wanted to piss them off.

it took me a while to get into 36 Chambers too

the dark, off-kilter beats went over my head at first, but after a few spins it became one of my all-time favourite albums.

Probably

My Bloody Valentine's "Isn't Anything", not because I thought it was awful but because I found the whole sentiment and sound (especially the first track) quite terrifying and a little overwhelming. I did realise however that I could like it for those reasons..

Hal's 'Hal'

...I didn't hate it so much as just not find it particularly engaging. I recently unearthed it to stick on my iPod as an experiment, and it turns out it's a total pop gem, out-Beach Boysing the Beach Boys by a considerable margin.

I'm hoping the same thing happens for British Sea Power's 'The Decline of British Sea Power' as I bought it on release day, listened to it once and have never felt the need to listen to it again. So on my iPod it goes, waiting to be re-discovered.

busted's first

dismissed it at first. massive schoolboy error, learnt to never again dismiss without first hearing...

In Rainbows

In my foolishness I hated it after first listen...
