Drowned in Sound

Where are they all? I find that the majority of indie nights fall into two categories: a) yer usual swaggering haircut music and b), try-hard DJ playing stuff he considers "experimental" in an attempt to compete with the avant-garde.

There are a few exceptions, but I find that by and large this is the rule. All I want to do is don those hairslides and my cardie and giggle and dance to Bis/Gravy Train!!!!/Kenickie amongst fey boys for goodness' sake, without a poser in sight. Is that really so much to ask?

Ace, thank you

We'll see what happens when I'm next in London, at any rate.

I often attend

Offbeat, at Sheffield University. Sounds like the kind of thing you're looking for.

^seconded

also that dog on wheels night? never been myself

In Sheff too?

Hmm.

i went to a dog on wheels in about october

in the new venue of the green room, i'd heard good things but it was just a very busy pub and the sound system wasn't up to much.

offbeat is ace, can't make tomorrow's unfortunately though :'(

Dog on Wheels is odd

The music is often better than Offbeat, but it doesn't seem to consistently draw a crowd. I've no idea why.

I've heard all about that

I just wish I knew people in that part of the world!

planning

on going there tomorrow/tonight, sounds really good but this is the first time i've been able to go.

Only one in the entire world?

C'mon, the scene ain't *that* dead...

.

I'm DJing at Club the Disco at the Boileroom in Guildford tomorrow night.

The music is better there when I DJ. I once went and some foolios played Chelsea Dagger... not once, but TWICE! The same people played Roll With It by Oasis that night too. GRRR.

Now I like Oasis

and respect a DJ who isn't too big to play 'em. However, the atmosphere has to be right. Oasis+pissed up gel headed Ben Sherman wearing lardarses=pure terror.

There is never any excuse for Chelsea Dagger, however.

What kind of stuff do you play?

.

I play stuff like Yeasayer, The Cribs, Adam Green, Tegan and Sara, The Bird and the Bee, Goodbooks, Feist etc. I branch into electro later on in the night, where I will play obscure stuff that no-one in the place will have heard of but also more popular things like Soulwax and Does It Offend You, Yeah? The sad thing is that it seems people would rather listen to The Killers and The Fratellis.

Here's my latest "electro" mix:

Young Love (feat. Laura Marling) - Mystery Jets
Sound Of Silver (Loud Pipes Remix) - LCD Soundsystem
My People (Mouse On Acid and Pretzels Remix) - The Presets
Single - Joe and Will Ask?
Center Stage (Curses! Remix) - Juiceboxx and Dre Skull
Word Up (Dirty South 2008 Electro Remix) - Cameo
Shake That - Spank Rock and Benny Blanco
Anyway You Choose To Give It (Boy-8-bit Remix) - The Black Ghosts
Rock It - Villains
Falling Down (Sebastain Leger Dub Remix) - Duran Duran
I'mma J (Spinstlyes Remix) - Lil Jon
Sunrise (Hey Champ Remix) - Yeasayer

This a mix I made a few weeks ago:

Promises (New Varisped Edit) - Badly Drawn Boy
Stayin' Alive (Teddybears Remix) - Bee Gees
The Absentee (Fujiya & Miyagi Remix) - Half Cousin
Move Bitch (DJ Neoteric Remix) - Ludacris
Shake Yer Dix (Pauluku's 808 Love Theorem) - Peaches
Sealion (Chromeo Remix) - Feist
Ready For The Floor (Jesse Rose Mix) - Hot Chip
So English Is Good (DJ Pedro Palooze Carioca Clube) - Tokyo Police Club
Gimme More (Dominic Von Werdt Remix) - Britney Spears

.

P.S.

JAG!

Why did I ever leave Guildford?

:O

Please do this in late March/early April?

.

It's on every Friday but I can't vouch for what the other DJs play.

My next dates there are the 14th March and April 11th.

THIS!

Lipstick On Your Collar...

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=54420538

Heavenly/bis/Sleater-Kinney/Bikini Kill etc. And they're guaranteed to play some Kenickie. Awesome.

Fit!

I've been wanting to go to that for a while as it happens, it looking like the only half decent club night in the whole of Bristol (excluding Wonky). You have reminded me, however, to get my arse in gear.

Leeds

seems to be something of a hotbed for it at the moment. Let's Be Friends at the Common Place, Don't The Kids Just Love It?! at the Library pub.

Also, With Whom To Dance? is at the Atrium on March 5th. It's going to be ace, and not just because I'm involved in it...

Toofee

Surely the Pink Toothbrush in Rayleigh still plays this on a Saturday night ...

Smile in Manchester

big-time indie pop night.

I did go there, once

In my entire four years of living in Manchester. How shameful?

To be fair, I wonder if me posting this was a bit of futile exercise. I mean, I loved Smile but simply couldn't find anyone to return with. It's not new nights I need, it's some non emo friends!

Bournemouth

art_student has set up a night in Bournemouth called "We Use Crayons" which starts on the 26th at the iBar.

You may hear:

"The Cure/Chromeo/Blondie/CSS/Kings of Leon/Bonde Do Role/Bloc Party/The Raveonettes/New Young Pony Club/Yeah Yeah Yeahs/Of Montreal/Mystery Jets/Peaches/The Rapture/Roxy Music/The Maccabees/The Clash/Bjork/Devo/Art Brut/Tilly and the Wall/David Bowie/Klaxons/Pixies/Foals/Soft Cell/Depeche Mode/Gary Numan/Elle Milano/Phil Collins/Good Shoes/Adam Ant/Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!/Justice/Franz Ferdinand/These New Puritans/Love is All/Battles/To My Boy/Sonics/Clor/More…"

They will be selling cakes and stuff too.

FAKRAY!

W00t!

hehe

yes indeed, thanks for the plug. and don't forget live music! coming up are minuscule hey (bordeaux shouty/twee duo), nic nell, sportsday megaphone and soho dolls.

i'm rather excited.

twee as fuck?

www.myspace.com/tweeasfucknight

or moogie wonderland [my friend's night, sorry this is the 2nd time i've mentioned it this week!] www.myspace.com/moogiewonderland

Worst. Place. Ever

Avoid Twee as Fuck like the plague. Terribly run, full of snobs and the DJ's are appalling. Avoid avoid avoid.

kaleidoscope

lolz

Our night in Nottingham...

...doesn't exist anymore. Well, we do the odd one-off. We still do gigs though, which are usually followed by some DJ-ing.

Don't Start Feeling All "Romantic" is the name.

According to our website, we play this sort of thing...

The Magnetic Fields / Jonathan Richman / Of Montreal / Belle & Sebastian / The Shins / Hefner /
Neutral Milk Hotel / The Pastels / Herman Dune / The Decemberists / Ted Leo / BMX Bandits /
The Vaselines / Comet Gain / Sleater-Kinney / The Hidden Cameras / The Violent Femmes / Bis /
Saturday Looks Good To Me / Huggy Bear / Talulah Gosh / Tilly & The Wall / Helen Love / Voxtrot /
Freezepop / All Girl Summer Fun Band / The Research / Los Campesinos! / Pavement / The Blow /
Wolf Parade / Yo La Tengo / Orange Juice / The June Brides / The Razorcuts / The Shangri-Las /
Bruce Springsteen / Jens Lekman / Bearsuit / Beat Happening / Shonen Knife / Smoosh / Islands /
Camera Obscura / The Ballet / Le Tigre / Mirah / The Aislers Set / Half Man Half Biscuit / Bikini Kill /
The Moldy Peaches / Adam Green / The Field Mice / The Organ / The Shop Assistants / Morrissey /
The Apples In Stereo / Architecture In Helsinki / DAT Politics / Tullycraft / Au Revoir Simone / YACHT/
The Fall / Animal Collective / Cats On Fire / The Mountain Goats / The Thermals / New Order /

...and lots more gubbins.

Twisted By Design (in Cardiff)

falls in to this category. I used to go there loads when I lived there, and try and go back when I can. I've definitely heard him play bis and kenickie!

the first time i posted this

it didn't show - so i posted again... but now i appear to have posted twice! apologies.

Ooh, Cardiff, that's not far from my neck of the woods

Now just to see if any of my indie-ish friends in Bristol (all, erm, two of them) are prepared to make the hop...

twisted by design

which is in cardiff, is amazing. i've only been one in the fast few years but i used to go loads and they play a lot of indie pop like that kind of thing. i used to work with the guy who runs it, and so whenever I go he plays Andrew WK for me.

they are out there

Smile in Manchester is my favourite of the lot, I do enjoy a good old dance there. Alongside this is the infrequent Kissing Just For Practice - Belle and Seb disco (also at the Star and Garter).

When I was up in Glasgow a month ago we hit some really good indie discos. There was the National Pop League (think it's last Friday of the month) which played some ace indiepop. Much more new-wave stuff than we get at indie nights in Manchester, which was interesting. There was also a cool night at The Flying Duck called The Singles Club. Again, indiepop and new-wave, but with the addition of people coming round with free toast for you! xx

Nottingham DiS DJ sets

usually include a fair smattering of My Bloody Valentine / Pastels / The Field Mice / Lush / Moose / Huggy Bear / Magnetic Fields / Kitchens Of Distinction / M.I.A. / Los Campesinos! / A Place To Bury Strangers / The Bridge Gang / Ipso Facto / Action Painting! / The Chiara Ls / Beat Happening / Effi Briest / Glasvegas / Chapterhouse and many more.

Next thing we're doing is at the Social on 29th March I think.

Indie nights and free food

Equals non wanky people.

I'd seriously recommend checking out

One of Spiral Scratch's nights - it would be right up your alley

There's loads of this sort of bullshit in Leeds

Usually in places where the drinks are far too expensive.

I went to a night like this at The Common Place recently, but that was okay because I could take eight cans of Carlsberg and lean in the corner, sinking further and further to the floor.

ps, "fey boys"?

club buff

is an indie night by the sea - in folkestone - small venue, the chambers, loud PA and great tunes. good crowd too, not too many haircuts show up, and the dancefloor's rammed. huggy bear, les savy fav, le tigre, maximo park, cylob and prince!!

The crowd can make a difference (sadly)

An eejit free space sounds good to me!

Oh, you know the type

Those belonging to the indie stereotype that existed long before haircuts and circulation stopping jeans, the type of blokes with unintentionally silly hair and unintentionally silly glasses that Morrissey would have bullied at school. Hmm. Perhaps they don't actually exist anymore.

I think

I love you.
