wot courselol

?

I applied for English at King's. But my personal statement was on about media. So it was just like an extra application really.

Needless to say, they're the only one I haven't got a conditional from yet.

Kings was English and Spanish

UCL was just for Spanish. So its not the same course, i lie.

Well

do you want to do English and Spanish
or Spanish
?

i dont mind doing either

thats the thing.

UCL's

spanish department was founded by some 19th century anti-monarchist rebel fighter if that sways you at all.

UCL

Kings is for tards

^^^

yeah omg totes.

NOT.

I don't know about english but I do's law @ KCL and it's gr8.

...most people in halls only got offers from either KCL or UCL not usually both....I think they confer.

ignore him

he says i went to a poly.

Seems unliekly

as I've been offered places at both and most people I know got in to both.

UCL has a better rep overall but it is pretty minor, ultimately in your case it comes down to if you want to do the joint hounours course or not. Personally I'm probably going to opt for UCL out of those two but thats only because they're better at my subject than Kings.

The LLB at Kings is better than UCL

but UCL definitely has a better faculty.

LSE beats them both as far as law is concerned though.

Does it really make any difference?

Both more or less in the same place, both have very similar reputations etc etc

exactly

what course it is (and therefore the type of people you'll meet) is going to make more of a difference than whether it's kings or ucl. They may as well be the same university spread across multiple central london campuses (there's even a shared student union, though they both have their own).

What course is it?

never knew anyone that did hispanic studies

but english is pretty good at kings, on the strand campus right by the river and next to the student union. Good stuff.

I'd recommend kings.

looking at the courses on the websites

spanish at kings looks a bit more interesting, and like there might be more variety. that said there isnt much in it, and maybe depends on whether south america or spain is more interesting to you.

ive heard language courses at UCL can be pretty easy.

depends on subject

I've studied at both (currently at KCL) and I'd say UCL has a marginally better overall reputation based on league tables etc. For some courses though KCL is much better.
Ultimately they are closely matched though so I'd go with where you felt most comfortable.

depends on the subject!

look at the units offered in each course, which one has units that appeal to you most.

on a side note, friends who did english at kings are complete cunts now/hated their time there.

make of that what you will, if I HAD to choose, UCL as Kings is just..urgh.

Is the english and spanish

course an 'accepted' combination or one that they've cobbled together for you? Ie. is it integrated, or just nabbing modules from both the english and spanish departments? I would be very careful with non-integrated courses, as they can be a right hassle.

Oh, and UCL of course, because I AM THERE. Perhaps that may be a factor against.

yeah but I am at King's

and I have more posts than you

His decision

will almost certainly be based on which of us repulses him less. I may have less posts, but unfortunately think I have been more repulsive over a shorter breadth of posts

cry

jonny_rat rates the smiths 10

but doctornovocalrecords is wearing lipstick. its too tough to call.

i can wear lipstick if you like

"just tell me what you want me to be"

*novocalcords

jonny rat wins. I think im probably leaning a bit towards ucl anyway.

If you go to Kings we may share some lectures.

Maybe even halls aswell. Party?

no, i havent made my mind up yet

what are you doing at kings? if you go there.

English and Film, I'm arty, me.

I haven't made my mind up either though.

hey dude

my friend does the course you want to do at Kings and says it's pretty awesome. kings is cool, come there, i'm there. although hardly ever in...i need to go to more lectures.

anyway UCL is for lamers.

I met this lady from the Spanish department

at KCL yesterday.
She seemed nice and interesting and clever, and taught some pretty badass modules.

If you go to KCL I might even have some lectures with you winklol eh eh eh eh eh.

But yeah! King's seemed really, really nice when I was there yesterday.

It woz gd.

which campus were you in?

strand?

yep, the Strand.

it's pretty, right?
Well, apart from the bits in the basement... But I was told I wouldn't have any classes there!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

the strand one is lovely

but i'm never over there...i'm in the waterloo one which looks like a council estate. it's terrible.

haha the basement isn't too bad :D i love the chapel, it is probably the nicest bit of the whole college.

Yeah, the chapel was pretty unexpected :D

Aren't all the Humanities departments based in the Strand? What are you studying?

i believe so

i'm doing 'english language' which comes under...something that isn't humanities, so all of my lectures take place where the scientific subjects are (as well as some law lectures it seems)

the only thing our building has that can rival the chapel is dyson airblade hand-driers, which are mind-blowing.

haha!

they sound terrifying.

!

wow! that looks truly brutal.

I'd be too scared to put my hands in... What if it was filled with vomit or something, and you couldn't even tell. They're probably a bitch to clean.
Also, massive LOL at "Making a hand dryer that works properly doesn’t happen overnight.

In fact, Dyson engineers spent 3 years creating Dyson Airblade™."

UCL has a better rep

Tru fax.

overall yes

but there are tons of things which KCL has a better reputation for

like the tasties

</fresh prince>

Often when applying for a job though

(I've been told/I imagine), the overall reputation is more important, unless you are applying for, for example, a research position.

I agree that overall reputation is most important

unless it is a job which directly applies to your degree as you say.

It's impossible to gauge these things but I'd be surprised if they weren't typically perceived as much of a muchness, certainly in the same bracket of "good, internationally regarded universities" so it would be very unlikely to make a difference in selection.
In fact, I think King's might have started overtaking UCL in some tables (may be KCL propaganda).

UCL arent fighting enough

fight more!

We're too filled with zen-like calm

besides, I sit in an office most days, and pretty much only use the shared UoL facilities anyhow. I would base your decision on the courses (specifically, on whether you're *really* sure about doing a joint honours course. They can be great, but you hella gots to be comited to both subjects, and know how the split is going to work).

The nightclub at King's

Has the giant bronze head of Desmond Tutu mounted on the wall.

i go to ucl

it is sexy time. Not sure how good it is for your course but you can't really go too wrong with the 9th best uni in the world.

Other than that, we're the only London to have a West End theatre onsite, we've got 160 clubs and societies, Senate House library is just done the road as is the University of London Union (ULU).

But King's is decent too so it's really upto you.

Not quite true

As LSE has a proper West End Theatre too

I do straight English at KCL

and i have to say, though it is good, the English Department is somewhat, urgh.
But it is a good university, and things, and one of my friends is doing spanish with English and she seems to really enjoy it. You only get to do one module of English though, so you can choose the best courses with the best teachers. (i.e. writing London in 1st semester & literary theory in second).

so, yeah, for your course i would choose KCL, becuase i think it is better for that, and the combined english and language courses work well at kings.
but the university is still somewhat strange, as much as i like aspects of it.
UCL does have a better reputation and also seems to have its head screwed on better.

It is a really hard decision.

the organisational/admin aspects of King's are undoubtedly bad

but they are also pretty bad at UCL. Maybe it is a university of London thing, because SOAS is meant to be appalling for this too.

to conclude

Kings was pretty shit. went there today. Got lost. got off the wrong tube. plus, the quality of university themed apparel at UCL was far higher.

Yep

Strand Poly FTL

I know them both quite well

if I had to choose I'd probably choose UCL. Nicer location, nicer university and seems to have a slightly better rep.

The people will generally be the same: rejected from Oxbridge, good background, slightly philistine, enjoy their toga parties and think they're the shit because they live in the middle of London. Generally decent people though.

googling toga parties

didnt help at all.
