i was thinking yesterday, that there were so many comedies i loved, that just didnt get any decent reception, and as a result have been very difficult to get a hold of later on.
here are a few...
- Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (obviously)
- 500 Bus Stops
- The Smell Of Reeves & Mortimer
- Stella Street
- Coogan's Run (only 1 series)
- TV Offal (Charlie Brooker, despite being ace, totally ripped this off)
what do you think?
I wouldn't put Darkplace
in that list as that has a decent following and is not difficult to get hold of
i suppose,
but most people havent heard of it... they might of on here, but elsewhere, its virtually unknown
perhap
It took for ever for the DVD to come out too
well worth it though
the commentary was ace :)
as were the unused interviews
Plus Darkplace
got cancelled.
Hardly the sign of a smash hit - therefore, underrated, or cult. Tends to be the same...
It didn't get cancelled
Nathan Barley
Was soooo under-rated. It's easy ehough to find in shops though.
Enough
I mean.
under rated?
It was an utter abortion of a show
No way.
It was a great show.
nope
I'm not having it. It's one of the least funny shows ever made. I'd rather watch Delboy fall through the bar on continuous loop for a year than one episode of Barley.
Nah, it had moments
The scene where he gives some bird some oral lovin' remains one of the funniest things I've seen on TV this decade.
Nah
I'm not having any of it. Utter bobbins.
wow
really? it was far from subtle but was still really clever too...
"You drift off
while I have a scoff"
its one of the best programs ever
i laugh continuously through it, and in a slightly different way to most things - just being amazed by pretty mcuh every second of it
"Bad to have a bad uncle"
Now that's genius.
of course, it is entirely responsible for bat for lashes
not so good...
it wasn't a bullet in the head enough
but it was very well observed and there are a few scenes that are absolutely gold
I'll also take umbrage with
charlie brroker ripping Tv Offal off. Lewis smith is a one joke (not a very good one at that)pony. And a bitter petty man to boot.
really?
yeah Lewis Smith did the same thing all the time, but it were still funny!
TV Offal made me nearly wet myself a few times :)
Was TV Offal the one with the gay daleks?
If so, that was comedy gold.
Fist of Fun
the smell of reeves and mortimer is hardly difficult to get hold of, in the 90s everyone i knew had it on video.
it
used to be anyway
agree with fof
I bought a dvd off ebay of tape recordings of it and tmwrnj.
Shit quality and now i've lost it anyway.
Did
you see Vic and Bob at home?
it were on in 93 i think, (i was 4, but it was taped) that was xmas viewing that should be on every year :)
it had the 1st ever shooting stars episode on it, Nuts In May, and it even had John Shuttleworth on it :)
i saw that
did anyone see vic and bob's 'Wekenders'? that was the best thing they ever did. It's freely available on youtube if you didn't.
This Morning With Richard Not Judy
I loved that.
^
This.
And I personally was disappointed with Dark Place, thought Marenghi's prior live shows worked much better.
Man to Man with Dean Learner was infinitely funnier.
man to man was cack
indeed
it was very watered down humour compared to Garth Marenghi, it bored me alot of the time really
Absolutely no way on earth.
How did you come to that assumption?
Man to man was great!
^this x about a million.
CURIOUS ORANGE!!! :D
Week lemon squash!
Simon Quinlank's hobbies, brilliant!
Kath and Kim
15 Storeys High
Freaks and Geeks
Sealab 2021
Aqua Teen..
TMWRNJ!
And Fist Of Fun was ace too.
I'm just having a weak lemon drink.
HOBBIES!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1xjcyyuDM0
Gavin and Stacey
Freaks and Geeks
Tim & Eric Awesome Show
^
Freak & Geeks is brilliant. I always love The Adventures Of Pete & Pete when I was a lad, but you can't get it anywhere now :(
Feather those bangs!
- yeah
Freaks & Geeks
Sledgehammer
'80's american detective spoof.
Was brilliant
15 Stories High
really funny sitcom with sketch show elements set in a tower block. It had Sean Lock in it but was only ever shown late night on bbc two and three.
Yes!
I've got the DVD and it's ace but no-one's ever heard of it.
ah i remember that
only saw it a few times though, the one where he makes friends with a rebelious priest was good :)
Attention! Scum
was fucking brilliant and very under-rated.
World of Pub too.
And Dare to Believe has a cult following but it's definitely under-rated.
I was just about to say World of Pub!
Bottom
THIS^^^^^^^^^^^
Bottom is ridiculously underrated. It also has given me plenty of ideas for kicking peoples faces in.
i used to like it
a lot when i was younger, but some of the moments that i used to laugh at fall a bit flat for me nowadays. rik mayall's face is amazing however.
Bottom?
Underrated?
Nah, a Movie, Live show & 3 series would say different.
Plus Dave play it all the time (Bottom Live 1 is on tonight, its fantastic) its slightly mis-understood, its alot more intelligant then it lets on
Joking Apart
starring Robert Bathurst. No idea what I'd think of it now but it used to have me in hysterics when it was on BBC2.
i would say sean's show
except i saw it on dvd on the weekend.
i get the feeling it may have aged badly though, and revisiting something you loved to find that is so dispiriting. so i left it there.
I used to love that.
I had no idea how much it was ripping off the Gary Shandling show though!
Wonder Showzen.
This:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcCEy8WOh18
yes
that was incredible
in what type of sense
did The Smell Of R&M NOT get any decent reception? Vic & Bob were HUGE.
well that
series didnt really...
the only thing that was ever HUGE was shooting stars..
The Office : An American Workplace
I HATED it until recently. I still intensely dislike their version of Gareth, but i think Steve Carrel is excellent (and he's someone i also have little time for), and it's just very funny.
Posh Nosh
Look Around You series 1
ah yes
far superior to the 2nd series, they spoiled the concept i thought :(
Dr Katz
i forgot about him.
is
anyone watching Never Better on bbc 2 at the moment ? its on thursday nights, Stephen Mangan. very very funny..
http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/neverbetter/
Early Doors
^ best modern day sit-com, by miles
was that the Craig Cash
in a pub thing?
Yep
Go on, tell me you think it's bobbins and force me to add one more reason to the list of things to elbow you in the chops for.
I can't really remember
it. I think I saw about 5 minutes, 5 of the most bobbin minutes I've ever had
My Life in Film
even though it stars the BT/My Family muppet.
The Lee and Herring shows mentioned above.
The Friday Night Armistice (much harder to find than the Day Today - although it was more focussed on contemporary events I suppose).
/\ this
And it was that 'muppet's' idea, too, so credit where it's due.
Why the BBC haven't DVD'ed it, I do not know. Bunch o' twats.
^ My Life In Film
inspired me to want to become a writer, for some reason...
and I have always loved, and will go on to love, Kris Marshall.
The Day Today
was the mutts.
On The Up
just the one mrs wembley lulz
The Critic,
Dr Katz and Home Movies were all pretty underrated cartoon comedies.
Soap, while not exactly unknown, was a comedy that was probably ahead of its time.
And I'm probably alone in thinking this but I used to be a big fan of the ill-fated TV version of Ferris Bueller.
Home Movies
PRETTY underrated? I'd say most underrated ever. People only like the Adult Swim shows that don't make much sense.
Rex the Runt
Nice
Good to know someone elase liked that show. I was a big fan of Vince.
Random Pavarotti Disease.
:D
yey
i was watching that on TV Links recently :)
Eddie Izzard as a talking easter island head :)
the armando ianucci shows
the office - an american workplace
once you get into it it is better than the uk one in my opinion. Much more depth and I prefer Steve Carell to Gervais.
it's good
but whereas the Office was almost believable as a documentary that's not the case with the American one
^This soooo much.
^
Time Trumpet
^ probably my favourite show of all time
pretty ace
but also quite patchy. Same with most of the things he's hosted.
yes!
and also Time Trumpet
I hope all of you that mentioned Lee and Herring stuff
are aware that they are still doing stand-up comedy. And very good it is too:
http://www.gofasterstripe.com/
TV Offal was bloody great. I don't think Brooker ripped him off though.
Gilberts Fridge
Genius.
Yeah, check out this website
90's comedian is possibly my favourite posession, I have watched it countless times and it still has me in tears of laughter the whole way through.
In regards to the original question though I'd say Monkey Dust, although it was fairly well recieved it's still not widely known. Also The Armando Iannucci Show and Lead Baloon (say what you want about it being a Curb rip off, it still has some brilliant moments).
oh ai
saw them both live last year, off to see herring in a few weeks again. He loved my heckles last time, I was chuffed.
Two Pints of Lager...
too obvious
Vikkers
was that
a poor attempt at being controversial.
NOOOOOOOOOO
Worst BBC3 comedy ever...
King of Queens
Everybody Loves Raymond
see above
King of Queens is hilarious!
