can someone please recommend me some amazing post rock?
obviously i'm familiar with the 'classics', but am looking for something unusual and a bit special!
cheers
are good if you want a more 'angular' and dark take on the lift to experience/ explosions thing. get the debut.
Epic45 are damn fine.
And while not strictly 'post rock' in the most conventional sense:
Pele
Belle Orchestre
Yume Bitsu
Max Richter
Hauschka
Colleen
(the new version of) The Exploits of Elaine
All have elements of the genre and clearly develop the genre in a mor einnovative way than your basic 'quiet/LOUD' dynamic.
Also I'm with Jordan when he says Strap the Button. Try the 'my formica table' blog and also www.recordsonribs.com for free stuff.
check out "And The Battle Is Won" by UpcDownc if you fancy something a bit special. It is more melody led that a lot of instrumental guitar stuff but it rocks. A criminally underrated band whom were also very good at the Metro last night.
yep, this is your captain speaking, port royal and library tapes all bleedin great. stafraenn hakon, also on resonant is absolutely amazing. he/they should be fucking huge!
others to check out in a kind of post rock vein:

used to be well exciting. not it's just a bunch of people pretending to be EITS and mogwai or being under the impression that metal is a good thing. you say you're familiar with the classics but i'm just going to presume you mean godspeed, mogwai and explosions so here are some names that spring to mind from yesterday, yesteryear and today....

One of the best instrumental albums I've heard in a long time. It employs some of the dynamic aspects of post-rock but the band's influences are so much broader; you can elements of Kraut Rock, Turkish psychedelia, raga, folk and metal in there too. The album's incredibly varied and the production's absolutely immaculate; given that there are generally about a thousand different instruments chucked into every song, the levels are so perfectly separated and every element is crystalline without being excessively slick. The drumming also deserves a mention; it's so loose and it sounds almost improvised but it's so tight and inventive at the same time. Wonderful album.
Yes! Steve Reich, electric counterpoint- absolutely beautiful. Grails- incredible. My perfect post rock line up- The Beans, Grails, maybe some Do Make Say Think, finishing with (although not strictly Post Rock)- Steve Reich and Terry Rley. If we're going on a tangent then avant jazzist's The Necks are also brilliantly hypnotic.
I can't recommend Grails highly enough. Their debut, 'The Burden of Hope', is one of my favourite albums ever. The guitar tones are so...naked. And the drumming is so loose and sexy.
Local band to me, and they're fuckin' class. Supported Pelican and High on Fire last time I saw them, and they were the best performance of the night by FAR.

post rock + laptop electronica + jeff buckley. amazing.
but...
they're called BRENDA?
dont let it put you off
just imagine they're called the silver tongued lightning arkestra. in fact that would probably get them signed to constellation straight away.
Brenda
I can verify that, they rule.

shipping news
gregor samsa
...Shipping news...?!
WHAT?
yeah
are you questioning their postrockness or their goodness?
They're amazing
But where did you get the post rock thing from?
Unless you're not talking about the Jeff Mueller Shipping News...
dunno
they are slow, slint like in places, use alot of delay, dont think it is too crazy to call them post rock
in other news

Red Sparowes

Yndi Halda
i don't listen to a huge amount of post rock
but yndi halda are brilliant.
yeah
already a big fan of yndi halda and red sparrowes, but i'll definitely check out gregor samsa and sparrows swarm and sing
I have to say I dont agree with sparrows swarm and sing
a bit too derivative of GYBE for my taste.
Depends what you want:
If you fancy breaking out into more 'metal' style riffing in your post rock go for:
'The fire in our throats will beckon the thaw' by Pelican.
If you are looking for that classic EITS post rock sound go for 'Young MOuntain' by This Will Destroy You.
However if you want the most refreshing original, stripped down, energetic and criminally overlooked post rock go for:
'Let Airplanes Circle Overhead' by Let Airplanes Circle overhead. Listen to 'Fury against the formless' and then thank me for the recommendation! :)
TWDY's Young Mountain EP
is excellent. A bit disappointed with the new s/t album though.
you familiar with lift to experience?
check out;

Paul Warhurst = better
surely the old version of Exploits
is more post-rocky?
to be honest i dont give a shit, as long as dave is finally singing its all good.
Yes, but 'twas more than
a bit derivative of other post rock bands and wasnt so good.

TWDY's
young mountain ep is pretty awesome yeah. I like caspian but they are pretty samey and generic EITS style

Both are brilliant, just listen to the stuff on their myspace pages or something.
Grails - Burning Off Impurities

scandinavia is a good place to look
ef are especially worth checking out and if you like the more jazz influenced stuff try Jaga Jazzist and Samuel Jackson 5.
also well worth a look:
el ten eleven
saxon shore
god is an astronaut
Someone please...
..mention Aereogramme.
Post-rock at times. Metal at others. Can't really categorise all of their work, they dabble in many things.
But if you like post-rock you WILL find something you like.
i don't think i'd classify them as post rock
but they were amazing.
aye
fantastic band
How come no ones mentioned..
Rodan.
Bastro.
Polvo.
Bilge Pump.
Karate.
Also...
The Beans
Polmo Polpo
Russian Circles
also check out Terry Riley's In C(mantra), 40 years ahead of it's time...
Polmo Polpo
is like panda bear, only better.
I'll also add valley of the giants ('post-rock' supergroup alert!) and early broken social scene.
Some stuff by Jackie-O-Motherfucker too for sure.
Bing and Ruth and their affiliates based in New York are also brilliant.
If we're going for composers add steve reich and glenn branca to that list.
Also, Fridge. although they are a bit well known.
Karate..?! What are you talking about?!
grails are very very good
check them out.
Also, Tortoise get a heavy recommendation...
Vessels
are really good. enough vocals and odd time signatures to keep it fresh. they're also awesome live.
upcdownc are good too
^^^

okay
then go onto glenn branca! whoo!
