German hip-hop: Die Fantastischen Vier are great if you like the Beastie Boys
German punk: Die Toten Hosen were every bit as good as their London peers
German pop: Nina's '99 Luftbaloonen'. As good as anything to come out of the 80s.
German electro: Kraftwerk. Are we not ahead of our time?
German experimental: I Can. Can you? OK, so one of them was Japanese, but all the same...
German baroque and classical: OK, maybe I'm taking this a bit too seriosuly.
For the record, Italian hiphop is officially the worst.

I'd completely forgotten about Die Fantastischen Vier. They were mint, they used to be on mtv all the time in the early/mid nineties.

Viva is mostly horrible
and you shouldn't really base your judgement on German music just on that.
They used to have a good programme called Fast Forward but it's long gone...
To my ears and for what it's worth there isn't a band as good as Tocotronic in Britain but I'm German so I understand the words. A lot of German music just doesn't translate so well...
