o dear o dear

but then again didnt they say that in Only Fools & Horses?

yes...

in 1981.

Good on Jo Whiley for completely ignoring it.

to be fair

it's probably not an offensive term in america

...

He can be as casually racist as he likes. Could he just finally for the love of all that is good and worthy in this world PUT A FUCKING SHIRT ON?

^ THIS

i saw him shirtless on tely on Friday and it make me feel quite sick. TOO FUCKING OLD.

I thought he said that!

and they acted as if nothing had happened.

between this, 'the weirdness' and songs with sum 41...

...i think it's time for iggy to be put down.

...

What's a "paki shop"?

...

It's a shop run by Pakis. Known for their reasonable prices and excellent opening hours.

If you're a shop owner and someone says you run your establishment like a paki, consider it the deepest compliment.

many british newsagents*

are owned and run by asian people. "I'm just going down the paki shop" would've been a normal phrase said by someone in the 1970's.

*like Apu in the Simpsons I guess.

Context?

i dont know exactly

but he was talking about britain, and how he loved walking round camden and going into "paki shops".

/

something about buying trousers, walking down camden, and going to 'the paki shop'.

its maybe un-pc

but i dont think its really that racist, especially cos iggy was just obviously trying to speak the 'lingo'

...

i do find it bizarre that there was no mention or apology from whiley or radcliffe, even after he had left.

they were hoping

no one heard, im writing my letter of complaint as we speak, they're not gonna get away with this!

do you reckon if we complain

we'll get given vouchers for a free tv licence, like if you complain to macdonalds?

.

"I'm off down the...paki shop. You want anything?"
"...No."
"Actually, I don't think I'll bother. They've always got that...wog box on."

he was 60 in April

and from a different generation, the mind goes at about 56

Geez

I still don't get it. Pakistanians don't like to be called "paki's", I guess? Overly sensative sand nig--

Ha! You thought I was gonna say something bad. Dincha?

We got a few black dudes in our office (which is weird cos Orange County usually frowns on color unless they're mexican and mowing their lawns)... and I always laugh when they call each other "negro" and stuff. I never join in cos that's not p.c.! They're rather great guys actually. Anyway, methinks the world has gone pc berserk.

PS I doubt Iggy is racist

he was dating or married to an asian gal for a long time. Maybe he still is.

it's kind of different though.

just because some people are comfortable with it in a closed environment doesn't mean you can say it on live tv.

What if the Rolling stones went on Leno and said how they loved "niggers rice" or something....

Plus 'they' aren't all pakistani.

Fair enough

There's something to be said for both sides of the argument, eh?

All this tip-toeing around calling a black guy a black guy seems a bit much.

Of course, there are derogatory terms which help fester racism... which ain't good. Obv.

And I still doubt Iggy is in any way shape or form a racist. He's a lot of things, most of them (deliciously!) bad, but that's not one of them.

I agree

as i've already said, my biggest WTF was with the presenters (of britains biggest hippyathon) who completely ignored the remark, when usually if someone says fart out of turn on the BBC they apologise profusely for the next half hour.

As pointed out on another message board

maybe he was referring to an offy, known in America as 'packie stores' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquor_store)

Yeah

It must not have the same connotations in america or something. I thought it ws funnier him trying to say "wellies"

Iggy Pop/Stooges

Have been criticised numerous times over their career of being racist. If you listen to the Metallic KO live album you hear Iggy shout at some guy about how he thinks he's bad and could beat Iggy up because he's black (and therefore good at at fighting I assume) and Iggy's white; all the while Ron is wearing a swastika arm band. Writing tracks such as 'Nigger Man' didn't do him any favours either. Iggy's currently got a black girlfriend though (and has had others in the past), so I wouldn't think he ACTUALLY hates black people.

As for this instance, I guess he just didn't think that what he was saying was that bad. I don't think (but don't know) that 'Paki' has any negative racial connotations back in the good ol' US of A.

Wasn't the Cure's

first ever hit 'killing an arab'? What was that all about then, eh?

Albert Camus...

The famous Algerian goalkeeper (and part time philosopher / novelist) wrote a book called The Outsider, in which the protagonist kills a man of Arabian ethnicity for no discernable reason. Henceforth, Robert Smith drew inspiration from it. The big racist.

Can I employ the BBC to apologize for me?

Cos I say a lot of stupid things and it's a bit of a pain for *me* to be the one to apologize. I'd much prefer the BBC to take over the responsibility you understand.

..

Hosts Jo Whiley and Mark Radcliffe made no on-air apology on Saturday night, prompting three viewer complaints.

THREE

YES

THREE

Mountain

Molehill.

Mos' def.

It's post-Hutton

The BBC just apologise for everything now, just in case.

iggy pop

The word "Paki" is a derogaroty term end off.

Used to hurt and offend spray painted on people shop windows walls shouted abuse all in the 80's-rarely used now due to 3rd/4th generation Asians be them from south Asia to the middle east very much integrated here now.

Obviously he used the word to stay in the vernacular of Camden as someone pointed out in the 80's.

Besides this embarrassment, The stoodges are still the dons.

I watched the live feed and was disappointed in Iggy trying to be a volatile youth sadly, but I also felt the heat from the two brain dead presenters who just laughed and spluttered a giggle.ooOh you are awful Mr pOP!

/

um.. lol

I hope one of them was the person who commented above.

comment above

Probably just three people viewing them,at that ungodly hour i suspect!

Jo & Mark both say err alot and it seemed so uncomfortable- fake smiles and body language.

I wonder if people really think its okay to voice derogatory terms weither they're being harmless or not-No matter where they are regardless of geography. Anyway thankfully its was something very minute and throw away comment a bit of a pain in the bum.

i doubt he meant it i na racist way

but it concerns me that it may be the case that its normal for his uk friends.

i don't think 'paki' has hte same connotation in america.

here we had/have 'paki-bashing'.

In america they have 'button pushing'.

racism against asian people seemd to be acceptable in the US

im always quite shocked by it when i'm over there... evern soem of the apu stuff on the simpsons i find slightlyy offensive

.

It’s a historical thing. Making fun of Asians in America is seen like taking the piss out of Italians or Poles. It’s different to the racism faced by Asians in the UK. In the UK Asians came beholden to the UK. They came to fill the shit jobs and were dependent on the opportunities in Britain that were not available back home as they came from mostly poorer areas of the subcontinent.

In America, Asians came in a massive immigration boom after Truman lifted the ban on non-white immigration.

The Asians that came to America were generally affluent and their capital gave them to choice to move anywhere they wanted. This gave them confidence in America to be seen just like any other migrant community, white or black.

This confidence tends to give them thick skins when it comes to this kind of racism. They can ‘rise above it’ because there is no history of violence or subjugation associated with the ‘apu’ jokes whereas in the UK ‘Paki’ brings up images of paki-bashing, Aftab Ali’s mutilated body, shops being vandalised, shit through letterboxes etc.

also americans seem to hate curry

gross generalisation i know... but even fairly liberal americans i know seem to have a casual racism towards indians and pakistanis

i have always found it quite strange.. but i guess that sort of answers it

People are making an illusory distinction here

between using racist language and "actually" being racist. What does this mean? It's part of the same logic that produces racism itself - i.e. the idea that people are something more than the sum of their characteristics.

Is ignorance now officially a defence for racism? In that case, why are working class idiots like Jade Goody censured while middle class idiots like Iggy Pop aren't?

If it barks like a dog...

^5

Indeed.

I kissed Iggy...

... on Saturday night.
