A tribute album collecting together covers of Smashing Pumpkins songs is forthcoming, featuring a wealth of rock talent.

The album is to be released by MySpace Records and given away with the July issue of Spin magazine, and its tracklisting looks like this:

Panic! At The Disco - 'Tonight Tonight'
(+44) - 'I Am One'
The Academy Is - 'Mayonnaise'
Deftones - 'Siva'
30 Seconds To Mars - track TBC
The Bravery - 'Rocket'
Young Love - '1979'
The New Amsterdams - 'Thirty Three' Test Your Reflex - 'Ava Adore'
Ben Kweller - 'Today'
Hawthorne Heights - 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings'
Gliss - 'Rhinoceros'

I like Deftones. We were just talking about them in the office, actually. What else came out of nu-metal that was any good, really? That said, I saw that tossbag singer out of DiSturbed on Cribs the other night - he's clearly done okay through singing like an ape with its nuts in a tiger's jaws.

.

track TBC - what a tune. Really defined a whole era for me.

Oh why did fucking Panic! at the disco

havew to do my favorite song from my favorite album ever.

cunts

It's a bit disheartening

That Corgan is letting bands cover tracks that he'd probably be slagging off ten years ago.
If the Pumpkins go emo, I'm going postal.

Incubus

were another good band to come out of nu-metal. But they're not on this album. Boo.

Deftones

didn't come out of Nu Metal....they along with Korn, invented it.

This looks awful

Obviously Deftones are excellent (Kweller's alright too) but what the hell is going on with this compilation? I find most 'tribute' lps these days have the biggest names to attract the cash rather than decent bands who are actually fans of the artist.

Surely if any of those bands are fans or influenced by Corgan and co they wouldn't make the dreadful dirge they call 'their own music'.

How would you like to see cover a Pumpkins masterpiece?

I don't think anyone can cover them

And do it enough justice. Corgan is a bit marmite but you can't argue that he's not got his own niche.

Agreed

Just like the pitiful array of 2nd rate folkies collected for the Jeff/Tim Buckley Dream Brother tribute.

Agreed!

Here here. Whatever will they think of next? Pop punk bands doing a Slint cover album....?

....

Hawthorne Heights......covering Bullet with Butterfly Wings......I'm almost speechless...nay....disgusted.

nu metal

you can't deny that for about 6 months Nu Metal was pretty awesome. Limp Bizkits performance at Reading 2000 was perhaps the pinnacle of the movement. Obviously now, we just laugh at the whole scene and the silly bands who got labelled nu metal 6 or 7 years ago are desperately trying to escape it. Perhaps they should all add a 'The' to their band name.

Deftones are a different breed. A league above any band from that era. The only band in 2000/2001 who were well aware that Nu Metal was a passing fad.

Obviously,

people will try to deny that

.

Good point. I recently found an old copy of the NME from the week after that Reading with Durst on the cover jumping around with loads of confetti going off. They grudgingly declared it one of the highlights of the weekend.

This is fucking disgusting.

There are so so many utterly abhorrent and fundamentally dispiccable wastes of fucking oxygen and airtime on that record. It's essentially a collection of Smashing Pumpkins songs as interpreted by a variety of trendy haircuts. GRRRRRRR

right

except replace "trendy haircuts" with "shit bands"

virgin records must really hate the pumpkins

-

I hope the majority of those bands die before they have chance to record

Painfully.

Whilst on-stage.

The most remarkable thing about this article

is that apparently The Bravery are still going.

Ben Kweller

Doing Today would be interesting. I'd much rather hear Brendan Benson doing it though.

oh dear

oh dear oh dear

The question is...

who actually will want to listen to this more than once? Anyone? Hello?

brilliant

every time I listen to Siamese Dream, I always come to 'Rocket' and think, "why oh why couldn't this track have been recorded by The Bravery".

I thought you meant the hardcore band Panic for a second then.

Also Poison The Well covered three Pumpkins tracks and did a decent job.

isn't there already

a Pumpkins covers L.P entitled 'the killer in you'? (could be me...). I remember it being shocking. I doubt this will be much better. Apparently, P!ATD can also massacre 'Karma Police'. Cunce.

I have not words, I was just sick in my mouth

and i pretty sure it tasted better than this album will sound

P!@TD...

...cover 'Tonight, Tonight' live, clearly nothing like the SPs doing it, but they don't murder it

Panic played that at Leeds.

They do it pretty well, if I do say so myself.

lies

they are only good at it cos they learn it from Mellon Collie note for note! Would have been a great opportunity for a band to rework the song and make it their own. Would have been amazing to hear just about ANY band do that. It's just too easy to play the song when covering. I always thought of tribute's and covers as a way of showing your interpretation of someone else's work. If I wanna hear tonight, tonight I can put the damn cd on whenever!
No offence to you, glad you enjoyed it, I just thought it was a waste of time.

Comment from Youtube

I went to look for a video of P!@TD doing their cover of Tonight Tonight, curiosity and all that, and found this comment which reminded me of DiS.

"this is an abomination to music.
learn your own songs,
get a new singer,
and a new drumset you fag.
i hate this band.
i hope they die in a fire.
and dont make any more money.
and rot in the pit where all horrible god forsaken bands go
and touch each other in agony.
burn patd
just burn."

Oh and

I find this kind of cover album intriguing in the potential crapness/greatness of it all. Sometimes you find a cover which makes you think of a song in an entirely different way, because of another interpretation of it.

total balls!

The thing that bothers me most about this is the bands are that have been chosen! P!ATD, TAI, +44, 30STM. I wonder if the Pumpkins have had any part in this. It seems that they are looking to big up their name once again by feeding off these newer bands. Deftones are there to give it weight I think and not really to sell it, cos their cover will probably turn out rather good, unlike the rest! Pumpkins are gonna go all EMO and haircut on us! Nothing particularly fancy or interesting about them or their music. bland bland bland! This cd will be SHITE! The only haaaaaalf decent cover I have heard so far has been TAI because it sounds like a band paying tribute and not just PLAYING the song.

+44 can fuck RIGHT off and get a singer who can sing!

P!ATD can fuck right off and stop using a backing track... would it hurt to be original with the song, if you can't then you should really be trying to pay tribute to any band I think! No point in just doing the exact same song.

Why are MCR not on this? At least Gerard Way looks like a deformed Billy Corgan and MCR apparently started because of the Pumpkins. Not that they're gonna make the cd any better, they are also a terrible band!

One last rant...

Why haven't The Bravery given up yet?
They are NOT good and they NEVER were!!

I heard an industrial tribute to the pumpkins, absolute bollocks, lots of bands that wanted to be Depeche Mode trying to play pumpkins songs on their casio's! Total WANK!

Hmm...

Far too much emo here.

The Ben Kweller one might be worth a download.
