Arcade Fire: "F*ck all those bands who've got no ambition"
Posted: 21 Feb '07, 11:13
Arcade Fire - whose new album Neon Bible is out at the beginning of next month - have hit out at superstar bands like Oasis and U2.
The band's Win Butler spoke to NME about the Canadians' fairly low-key approach to achieving success:
"It's not like we shun success, but at the same time we don't want to shove it down people's throats. In the UK there's this kind of rock star competition.
"I don't know if U2 started it, or The Stones or Oasis, but a lot of bands think in terms of: 'I'm going to be the biggest band in the world. Fuck all those bands who've got no ambition'. I think that's a total crock of shit."
Butler then told the weekly that he finds the over-marketing of acts utterly not interesting, and that selling music is just like "selling a fucking toaster or a cruise package".
Is that why we've not had a copy of Neon Bible yet, then?
Way to twist their words
with that out of context headline quote. Very tabloid.
An NME-esque
headline Mike.
Surely "fuck all the bands who fuck all the bands who have no ambition" would be better representing what he said, rather than make it seem a bit controversial?
misquote
like they said.
youre painting them in a bti of a bad light there i think.
hes making a good point about the over marketing of bands.
'Band From Montreal hits out at over-marketing'
ive been here before...
You're not missing much
23 by Blonde Redhead craps in a plastic bag, duct tapes the bag over Neon Bible's head, then kicks it down the stairs while insulting it's mother.
I SO hope youre wrong
really i do.
surely
a better headline would've been:
Arcade Fire: Selling music is just like "selling a fucking toaster or a cruise package".
That way it wouldn't have been misleading, and you could've still got the swearie in.
bf
*Lame Headline Alert*
I'm trying hard, I really am
..but I'm not sure that Neon Bible is up to scratch. But how you're supposed to follow Funeral, I don't know.
To me it sounds like a cross between the early EP and Funeral.. so bit of a step back.
(are you not on Oink, Mike Diver?!)
Neon bible
is totally wank. most dissapointing record ever!
I totally agree
I listened to it once and won't bother again.
You can't really judge it..
if you've listened to it once. Jesus. Hoe many albums have you actually 'got' on the first listen?
Teeny backlash
Alert.
Bunch of idiots
I would reccomend you listen to it a good few more times, prob best album since TVOTR.
I agree
it sexcellent and i can't wait to see them in march... didn't think that much of it at first either but its really sunk in.
It may not be as good as funeral
but i think it's pretty darned good. totally disagree with it being "most disappointing record ever". More than a fuck of a lot harsh that.
Hows that
next NME article coming along?
yeah right on brother
dont really agree most bands want to be massive some dont smells like indie ego boy to me
but on the "selling music like a toaster" thing ... for fuck sake your signed to a major label ... its a business... they sell music ....thats there product....same rules as any other business apply.... sometimes it can be crass but get over yourself ...i am pretty sure his band benefited from it... i dont see him giving his church or his new guitars back
there still fucking brilliant though
Surely it should read
Arcade Fire - "selling a fucking toaster"
Or...
Arcade Fire - Toasty?
Headline of the year
nice work Mr D
Total misquote
Way to misunderstand his point, Mike.
Regarding what they ACTUALLY meant, he had a point if he meant Oasis. Or indeed Kasabian or any of the interviews where people say that you might as well quit if you don't want to conquer the world. But it would, I think, have been misdirected at U2. Not to say a little uncharitable, after they took them along as support and used Wake Up as their intro music on every night of the Vertigo tour... but I don't remember Bono ever coming out with anything like that.
For the record...
...I think 'Neon Bible' is terrific.
Only disappoints in not being another version of 'Funeral. Which would have been more disappointing than anything.
Maybe people need to
relax a little? Instead of coming across crazed..
funny headline, winner. Sorry mike, they get that syrup in them and they get all antsy in their pantsy..
af
have made a good point, i dislike bands who actively seem to want evrryone in the whole world to listen to them and are prepared to do anything for it (ie that imfamous quote by ricky wilson about jacking off a tramp)
and mr alex head, good super troopers reference!
Didn't they
support U2 somewhere?
And why was
the second letter of "fuck" asterisked out in the headline? Why the misquote? Was Mike making some kind of ironic point that has flown over out heads?
Because
It's been taken totally out of context. Therefore it's funny.
Yes...
... and U2 came on stage to one of their songs, I think 'Power Out'.
That makes it even more ballsy that they'd slag them off.
i think that makes him a
hypocrite not brave
i am pretty sure he didnt mention anything at the huge gig they got to play
through the set they were thinking .... "i really hope this doesnt result in lots of people hearing are muusic and buying are record"
He sounds like a cock to me
neon bible is great.
you will see when its released.
It's probably only you and me...
...that haven't downloaded it and actually intend to buy it, from what I can gather.
Oh Arcade Fire
Why must you be so shit?
jkicks
'I think that makes him a hypocrite not brave' - Ever heard of punctuation? It can be useful when one is attempting to not look a moron. Oh, and whilst we are on the subject of the moronic, what a fucking daft thing to say!!! Just because U2 walked on to one of their songs (Wake Up) and they supposedly supported them doesn't mean that they have to wholeheartedly adopt their ethic! Also, where did you get that Arcade Fire didn't want people to buy their records or hear their music you absolute fuckwit. Learn to speak, learn to spell, learn to think and then fuck off to another website where you can discuss music with people who are as brain dead as yourself.
Grammer
I think it was pretty clear what i was saying ... why take a gig with U2 if you hate there approach?
Obviously i was joking about them not wanting to sell albums, it just seemed a little hypocritical to criticise a band that gave you support and helped raise your profile
to get such abuse from you over just putting my opinion on the here just shows what a dickhead you are.
spelling and punctuation are no guarantee of intelligence as you proved above. You go fuck yourself
maybe you need another website one where everyone thinks the same way then you
ironically
arcade fire would be perfectly justified in saying "fuck all those bands who've got no ambition". i dont care for the neon bible (i dont even care that much for funeral, particularly its second half) but at least they actually try, which is more than be said for most bands as big as them or bigger
ha ha
"I would reccomend you listen to it a good few more times, prob best album since TVOTR"
juggles balls and plays clown music
