Whenever I tell anyone that the Pogues are a great band, they seem to snear and dismiss them as a band who wrote one good song ('Fairytale of New York). I personally think the Pogues are fabulous, and they have loads of great songs, including:
A pair of brown eyes
A rainy night in soho (covered by Nick Cave on that b-sides/covers thing)
Misty Morning Albert Bridge
Thousands are Sailing
Boys from the County Hell
Thats to name but 5. What is your opinion of the Pogues? Is Shane McGowan a lyrical genius? Or are you simply non fussed?

Genius
and the best song is IMO
If I Should Fall From Grace With God
Fantastic choice...
what an underrated band.
I like them.
Dirty Old Town (although written by Kirsty McColl) is brilliant.
Its an old Irish song!
Erm...
Are you sure? Check the writing credits.
I'm probably wrong....
But I assumed it was because every Irish wedding I have been to the bands always play this with all the old irish stuff.
h'actually
written by her dad
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_Old_Town
Yes!!!
I claim a victory of sorts.
kind of.
in the sense that The Dubliners made it their own. but.... didn't write it :)
I win
I was closest. I got the right family at least! Plus it's about Manchester.
can you post some of his genius lyrics please?
obviously lyrics arent poetry, so you cant accurately judge them written down, but if hes a genius there must be something worth reading.
Here you go...
This is 'Thousands are sailing'. A song about Irish immigrants going to America. Its fucking brilliant.
The island it is silent now
But the ghosts still haunt the waves
And the torch lights up a famished man
Who fortune could not save
Did you work upon the railroad
Did you rid the streets of crime
Were your dollars from the white house
Were they from the five and dime
Did the old songs taunt or cheer you
And did they still make you cry
Did you count the months and years
Or did your teardrops quickly dry
Ah, no, says he, twas not to be
On a coffin ship I came here
And I never even got so far
That they could change my name
Thousands are sailing
Across the western ocean
To a land of opportunity
That some of them will never see
Fortune prevailing
Across the western ocean
Their bellies full
Their spirits free
Theyll break the chains of poverty
And theyll dance
In manhattans desert twilight
In the death of afternoon
We stepped hand in hand on broadway
Like the first man on the moon
And the blackbird broke the silence
As you whistled it so sweet
And in brendan behans footsteps
I danced up and down the street
Then we said goodnight to broadway
Giving it our best regards
Tipped our hats to mister cohen
Dear old times squares favorite bard
Then we raised a glass to jfk
And a dozen more besides
When I got back to my empty room
I suppose I must have cried
Thousands are sailing
Again across the ocean
Where the hand of opportunity
Draws tickets in a lottery
Postcards were mailing
Of sky-blue skies and oceans
From rooms the daylight never sees
Where lights dont glow on christmas trees
But we dance to the music
And we dance
Thousands are sailing
Across the western ocean
Where the hand of opportunity
Draws tickets in a lottery
Where eer we go, we celebrate
The land that makes us refugees
From fear of priests with empty plates
From guilt and weeping effigies
And we dance
:(
He was asking for genius lyrics!
there they are. A wonderfully moving song. I suppose it means more to me having an Irish background.
i know, i'm agreeing!
The irony is
that it's loads of peoples' favourite Pogues song, but MacGowan didn't write it. It was Philip Chevron, who joined just before If I Should Fall... came out.
those are pretty great
phrases like "Dear old times squares favorite bard" irk me irrationally tho.
Whilst I'm here...
this is 'A Pair of brown eyes'. My favourite song of all time:
One summer evening drunk to hell
I stood there nearly lifeless
An old man in the corner sang
Where the water lilies grow
And on the jukebox johnny sang
About a thing called love
And its how are you kid and whats your name
And how would you bloody know?
In blood and death neath a screaming sky
I lay down on the ground
And the arms and legs of other men
Were scattered all around
Some cursed, some prayed, some prayed then cursed
Then prayed and bled some more
And the only thing that I could see
Was a pair of brown eyes that was looking at me
But when we got back, labeled parts one to three
There was no pair of brown eyes waiting for me
And a rovin a rovin a rovin Ill go
For a pair of brown eyes
I looked at him he looked at me
All I could do was hate him
While ray and philomena sang
Of my elusive dream
I saw the streams, the rolling hills
Where his brown eyes were waiting
And I thought about a pair of brown eyes
That waited once for me
So drunk to hell I left the place
Sometimes crawling sometimes walking
A hungry sound came across the breeze
So I gave the walls a talking
And I heard the sounds of long ago
From the old canal
And the birds were whistling in the trees
Where the wind was gently laughing
And a rovin a rovin a rovin Ill go
For a pair of brown eyes
from what i remember..
rum, sodomy & the lash has some truly brilliant lyrics. i see how they could be ignored with all the hyperactive musicianship though
i really like them
i do. they are just overshadowed by shane and his stupid antics........
Thousands Are Sailing
was written by Phil Chevron not Shane MacGowan (great song though) and 'Dirty Old Town' was written by Ewan MacCall not Kirsty.
The Pogues first three albums are all you need as evidence of MacGowan's talent. I think his gradual decent after that is one of the truly sad tales in music; he always seemed to buy into that romantic myth of the fallen literary boozer like his hero Brendan Behan. Funnily enough, because MacGowan was such a 'character',the rest of the band barely get a mention which is dreadful really....Terry Woods, Chevron, Cait O'Riordan and Jem Finer are all great musicians. Lyrically, my personal fave is "A rainy Night In Soho"
Bottle Of Smoke
for me. Awesome. As for albums, 'If I should fall from grace with God' has the highest peaks, but I think 'Rum, sodomy & the lash' is overall a better record, and not quite so polished.
.
Great band.
'Rum Sodomy & the Lash' is my favourite, even though Shane apparently didn't like that album.
Yup...
It's my favourite too.
"Is Shane McGowan a lyrical genius?"
Definitely in my book, though how his alcohol and coke addled brain managed to come up with anything is beyond me.
s
saw them on their latest tour..was amazing!
I love the Pogues
The lyrics are great - they've made me both laugh and cry at points - and the whole band are srsly good.
My mum got annoyed when my dad played "If I Should Fall From Grace With God", as she didn't think it was a good idea that we kids were dancing round the living room to an album with so many fucks in it.
also
Jem Finer now does amazing music/art projects, including an installation which makes music out of the weather and a composition designed to last a thousand years:

Just Been Listening To Them Again
The following are all fantastic:
A Rainy Night In Soho
Sally MacLennane
Dirty Old Town
Streams Of Whiskey
Misty Morning, Albert Bridge
A Pair Of Brown Eyes
Summer In Siam
Hell's Ditch
I heard Sally MacLennane on 6Music today and it reminded me how good some of their tracks are. Of course Fairytale should also be in there, but listening to it in May just seems wrong!
yes
the pogues are a fantastic band.
the auld triangle (written by brenden behan) is beautiful.
i also love a pair of brown eyes (goes without saying) and hells ditch which is underrated.
Yes McGowan is a genius
The Pogues were truely brilliant band. Rum Sodomy and the Lash is a genuine classic (great title too!).
My fave songs include
A pair of brown eyes
Sickbed of culcullain
Sally macleinane
Boys from the county hell
Greenland whale fisheries
Down in the ground where the dead men go
Thousands are sailing
I find IISFFGWG a little over produced, but its still got some greats. 'Fairy tale of new york' always makes me well up.
I love the Pogues
The Sickbed Of Cuchulainn is my favourite Pogues song.
It's a shame that going to see them now means getting trampled by drunks with union jack braces and bulldog tattoos - or at least it did in Newcastle - but seeing those guys sloppily waltz together as fake snow drifted around them during Fairytale seemed so spectacular at the time.
A great band
In Ireland, they're sometimes dismissed as a Republican, pissed lad band.
He has written some truly beautiful songs.
He is a one of the finest lyricists of all time
A Pair of Brown Eyes is in a class of its own. His voice in the early years was really underrated too (though it's now shot to bits) the way he sings the line "there was no pair of brown eyes waiting for me" kills me every time.
Boys from the County Hell is one of the best songs ever written
Excellent band.
anyone...
like "the nipple erectors", shane's first band ?.
picked up "only the end of the begining" the other day and im quite impressed.
Body of an American?
Anyone?!
Fantastic song.
The Pogues
are awesome.
Fairytale is probably only a mid-ranking song of theirs.
My favs incidentally
If I Should Fall From Grace With God
Sickbed of Cuchulainn
The latter is a favourite of mine too.
Nothing wrong with the first, mind,it just wouldn't make my top ten Pogues songs whereas the second definitely would.
It's SO FAST though.
Well, sure.
I'm not knocking it. I do genuinely like that song and can see why it'd be one of someone's favourite Pogues songs; I just happen to prefer a few others.
Ban Request.
I'm glad this was dug up
Ahhh I LOVE The Pogues!
My vote goes to the beautiful ‘Broad Majestic Shannon’. It’s a stunning piece of work.
