The Bronx awarded Album of the Year by Rock Sound
Posted: 06 Dec '06, 16:42
LA-based punk-rock four-piece The Bronx have been awarded the Album of the Year title by Rock Sound magazine, for their second self-titled effort.
The long-player, released earlier this year via Wichita, was rather less-well received by the powers that be at DiS: a five-out-of-ten for the album was complemented by a pair of four-out-of-tens for its singles to date, White Guilt and History's Stranglers.
Read DiS's album review here.
Vocalist Matt Caughthran told the rock-music monthly (it's not a trick name, Rock Sound) that he was dead chuffed with the recognition:
“Nothing like that has ever really happened to this band. It’s really cool to hear back from your magazine, and from people who appreciate music. You don’t really make music with the intention of getting rewards, or anything like that but... It’s cool man. Especially on this record because we worked so hard on it and it’s great to have someone recognise all the work we’ve done. It feels good.”
Rock Sound, like many other magazines available this week, counts down its records of 2006 in its current issue. NME has named Arctic Monkeys' Whatever People Say I Am... LP as their album of the year. DiS... we're saying nothing.

WOW!
That's a bit of a shocker. Would've thought someone like My Chemical Romance or AFI or someone of a similarly awful standard would've got it.
Nice surprise, although I don't think it's the best album this year BY FAR.
-
isis won the last two times...
...they released an album.
Not this time.
What does that tell you about In The Absence Of Truth? Not a lot, really.
-
of all the lame music rags
i dislike Rock Sound the least, and they often have good stuff on their cds (i don't think they have the clout to get the big bands; so second-best in terms of sales is, surely, to get good bands).
but, sadly, the new Bronx album is rubbish.

-
AFI awful
Fuck off!
-
They're certainly not great, by any means.
-
I think they are.
Better than the bronx certainly.
-
?!?!
Erm...each to their own, I guess.
-
Guess so :)

Their second album
is a definite grower; I wasn't that impressed the first time I heard it, but I've come to really enjoy it, and 'White Guilt' sounds rather fantastic played live :D
Well done The Bronx!
-
Seconded!
I even enjoy white guilt on the record, it not like they threw it in the middle or ought. And I plain don't understand that whole historys stranglers getting 4, it's one of my favourite bronx tunes.
Bravo chaps.
-
'Rock' album
of the year is quite obviously Blood Mountain.
-
^^^ agreed ^^^
-
-
-
It's certainly not
as rowdy as the first album, which is storming, but there's some absolute tunes on there. Don't see any harm in them choosing to diverge from straight up punk a bit.
AFI are shit.
-
-
Definitely
two of my fav gigs of the year but this album isn't as hot as I thought it'd be. Kudos to them anyhoo, they don't get anywhere near the love they deserve.
-
!
Really? I thought the new Bronx album was poor. Except for Sh''ty Future maybe...
I would have expected My Chemical Romance to get that award in Rock Sound though...
-
...
What did the new Isis get when it was reviewed in RS? For what it's worth, I fucking love it - it was number 2 on my staff list.
-
It might've got album of the month, actually.
But there was no chance that they'd win album of the year for a third year.
-
Album of the Year
My album of the year is The Crane Wife by Decemberists. I have spoken and what i say is gospel. Actually i know shit but its an awesome album.
-
second
Crane wife by far, The dvd in march is gonna be great too.
-
Oh and...
...Twelve Stops And Home blatantly
-
-
-
-
it got 8 out of 10, i believe
and no...it didnt get album of the month. but the bronx, it hasnt been that much of a slow year, has it?
-
* =
isis
-
No way.
Blood Brothers and Sika Redem, not to mention the sheer metal brilliance of Isis and Mastodon are all far more ambitious, powerful and make me feel stuff beyond sheer anger.
The Bronx...why?
-
-
Are you sure it didn't get album of the month?
I seem to remember that it did...
-
-
It got 8/10
third in the top 75.
-
-
-
-
Er...
The Bronx better than AFI?
That's about the funniest thing I've heard today.
-
AFI are a joke
-
Told badly
at a funeral, to a widow.

the new bronx album
i think it is not as good as their first one, but still worthy.
they are amazing live.
in the big scheme of things they are important because for me they represent kind of an alternative to all the make-up wearing poppy punk stuff coming out of the US at the moment. i think that might be why they got the award.
i think the drips (pre-bronx band) album that came out this year is better than the bronx second lp.
-
:D The Drips
are fucking amazing.
-
-
Weird.
Highly unexpected but still quite pleasing.
