What no Bright Eyes !?!-
Re: Peel compilation: full track listing
Why bother with this compilation CD at all?
Is Peel to become a BBC brand from the grave courtesy of 'Warner Strategic Marketing' - I hope not.
Or if he is then I at least want the Ivor Cutler box-set.-
Re: Peel compilation: full track listing
yeah i think so too, i'll be buying it for sure

Good point Cadd.
I mean I'd like to see Hefner on there (also surprised I can't see the Undertones) but it looks like a very good compilation and there's no way you can fit everything on.
Bet there's a sequel though...-
Re: Peel compilation: full track listing
I'm surprised you can't see the undertones, too! Lots of good music, but I could probably have predicted about a third of those choices. Predictable + Peel = something not quite right. Still, it's for charity and a hell of a lot better than most indie compilations we'll see this year.

30 unlabelled demos from his collection would be a more fitting release
Recorded at the wrong speed to fit onto one CD -

hehe that would be great.. wait, no Samurai Seven? Hefner? Bearsuit? Just a load of songs from bands most people have heard already?
Surely with the capacity of 2 discs, they could at least spare 30 minutes to show the world what John actually stood for. -

They're all tunes form the all time festive 50 .. i.e his listeners, not him. -

come on lets face it anyone who needs a compilation of Peel 'songs' is missing the point - so what if there's no Bright bloody Eyes on there - its not like its the only form of media out there you can hear some rather mild Yank indie on -and this thread could be endless with people saying 'what no 3 Johns, Bogshed, Yummy Fur, Truman's Water, Snow Patrol?' - remember the man dont accessorize the records he liked-
Re: Peel compilation: full track listing
You appear to be missing the point...The 'No Bright Eyes!' post was concerning Connor's rather ill-advised comments from The John Peel stage at Glasto...Something about him being a coke head...

I'm dissapointed theres no Napalm Death or Carcass on that. I assiocate them with Peel than a lot of the aritsts on that comp.-
Re: Peel compilation: full track listing
What no Tystion!!!!
Not that they were the best in the world or anything, but Peely was big on getting Welsh language stuff a leg up. He picked the band to support PJ Harvey during One Live in Cardiff yonks ago too.
Ahem...: I was talking to him that night and he asked if I could send him translations of the lyrics to Tystion's latest album - Hen Gelwydd Prydain Newydd - and a few weeks later i get a hand written postcard from the guy thanking me for my troubles. Prized posession or what!-

Theres no S R C I just loved Black sheep and because he played it at the wrong speed last outing i love it even more. It's not a bad selection though there are a few obvious omissions.
How about when he was stealing Williams Drum n Bass and jungle records. And no tasha killer pussies or Lauren Garnier you could go on and on. As i said it 's a reasonable selection and opens the door an inch or two into alternative artists/musical genres and then allows the listener to go out and hunt down those white label demos and rarities. If you want it bad enough then you will trail around every secondhand record store untill you find it.

Purely to be the opposite to all the other posts:
Yay for including Belle & Seb!
Yay for including Billy Bragg!
"Shipbuiding" - Woo Hoo!
And despite the fact that Pulp, Clash, Smiths, Joy Division, David Bowie and the Undertones were hardly surprise inclusions, great songs by them all!

No Mogwai? I don't need to be given something in exchange for helping others, I'll be giving the £12.99 to charity instead I think. -
fact - john peel day is on my birthday

lol i like the idea of 30 demos at the wrong speed on one disk, that would be quality! -

I won't buy it as I have virtually all the material already, sure you can't fit everything on but no McCarthy,Birthday Party or Half-Man? I think cd1 is a waste of time and ought to have been crammed full of more indie jewels! And why not do a compilation of the best of the Festive 50's? And WHY can't they release all the Peel Sessions Lp's, like Wedding Present, The Fall, Joy Division etc, and who can forget the wonderful ranting verse session from the redoubtable Seething Wells? (Craig) -

Don't worry. All the bands that are not on the compilation, but you feel SHOULD be there will eventually make it on Peel Compilation 11. -

im just gonna keep my tapes of peel stuff... it does seem weird to have no half man half biscuit, mogwai or melt bannana... and i make it two dance singles - where is the gabba
shit records are always compilations - just keep buying 7" singles of new / charity shop stuff and leave the 'now thats what i call peel' to fuckers.
in fact its just nonsence trying to make a peel compilation - there is only one and its at johns house...
