Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

Virgin Xtreme At 00.15 on Monday morning, Steve Harris, DJ on Virgin Radio's new music show, The Edge, launched their new alternative digital radio station, Virgin Xtreme (available on DAB in London, Sky channel 938 and over the web).

A sister station to the main Virgin Radio, it will offer heavy competition to Xfm. Since it will not carry the same content as daytime Virgin Radio (MOR soft rock etc) it should be more of a pure 'alternative' station than its principal competitor. Time will tell.

DiScuss: Has anyone been listening... what do you think?

  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

I think their idea of 'Xtreme' may turn out to be somewhat flaccid.

More Razorlight, Zutons, Killers and Coldplay then. I'd rather listen to Radio 3
  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

why is everything Xtreme? people are selling razors that are Xtreme (with that spelling) toothpaste that gives Xtreme freshness, what a load of wank. jump on the fucking bandwagon, bollocks wank fudge, im going to get on my skateboard and base jump off beachy head
    • Re: Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

Yeah, everything is being turned Xtreme. I'm just waiting for Xtreme breakfast cereal.

Playlist looks set to appeal to those who think they have heard of bands before anyone else. Shame. Could've been great.
  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

can i ask devonmalcom, who do you think, anderson or collingwood?
    • Re: Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

Collingwood, I'd say. Anderson has always struck me as a fiercely inconsistent bowler. Let's play safe, add another batsman, and though it slightly disrupts the balance of the side, we could get some runs on the board and still have Flintoff, Harmison, Hoggard and Giles, as well as Collingwood's military medium.

Yeah, and on the subject I don't think this radio station sounds like my cup of tea
      • Re: Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

if we're playing for the win/draw we need collingwood to bat (and in the field) as the batsmen have let us down this summer... bring on the rain I say....
  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

By the looks of it, Steve Harris is the ONLY dj on this station. The rest is an automatic playlist or something of that ilk. What's top of the playlist? Babyshambles.
  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

They're idea of xtreme is probably Snow Patrol and Keane.
    • Re: Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

Why do I get the feeling they're more likely to play pink than tool on this channel...

oh and yeah collingwood, though with the oval normally taking spin, i'd've picked keedy
  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

thats just the mtv2 playlist without the added goodness of videos or 120 minutes.

  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

For some reaosn I keep thinking about the Simpsons episode when they re-do Itchy & Scratchy with Poochie when I read this

This station just sounds horrible - if there are so many underground r&b/dancehall/reggae underground stations on FM its about time there were some more indie ones run from people's bedrooms - VIrgin xtreme just makes you want to lie down in front of an angry car
    • Re: Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

That playlist looks like the Kerrang! daytime playlist.

ie they're gonna play what's in the NME.
  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

Every of of NMEs "Biggest Band EVER!!" bands will be played until I cry.

I don't see this as being too much different than what's on offer at XFM or at several other stations.

And I wouldn't listen or buy anything that was called Xtreme.
    • Re: Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

The only thing xtreme about any of these bands is that they are xtremely crap (well most of them anyway)
This is just for all the indie kids to be even more pretentious twats than they were before.
I mean magic numbers? how could anyone call them xtreme?
the closest to heavy music on there is the foo fighters and green day, and the green day song on the playlist, well that's just a ballad.
I think someone's head needs to be on a stick for this one, I really do. I'll settle for Pete Doherty's though.
  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

I know this has nothing to do with anything Xtreme, but how do you edit your profile on here? I can't do it!!!!! : (
  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

id go with anderson as they have kept faith with him...
would have been nice to see gough given a last swan song

    • Re: Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

It's the almost the exact same playlist as Xfm. I wouldn't call that an alernative. it's just a copy. I wish there was a station like KEXP in seattle- now that would be alternative

Xfm is much better at night, with Exposure I and II
    • Re: Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

      Thankyou. I've done it now!

    • Re: Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

Alas, the music that now makes up Xfm-at-night was the raison d'etre of that fucking station in the first place. Now it serves as much purpose to the ethos and playlist of the station as the post-9pm equivalent on Radio 1 serves for its. I can see little difference in that Virgin artist line-up and the muck I stumble across on daytime 104.9 when it's played at me, anyway - dunno about Virgin's station prole-art-threat, but daytime Xfm makes me want to lay down in front of an angry car enough on its own (without even thinking about the people/history/'branding'..)

I wouldn't call Xtreme alternative either. But then neither would I bloody call 90% of Xfm 'alternative' (ha..) either. It pains me what coulda been, looking back - the irony is the original Xfm should've had one of the 3 licenses that eventually went to Virgin & Heart & another MOR/AOR station in the mid-90s. How incredibly different things could have been, simply if the station and its original owner/s had got what they all deserved & at its peak...

But then look at Kiss and even Choice, years down the legal broadcasting line, now owned by EMAP/Crapital respectively. Maybe I'm kidding myself and Xfm would've ended like it is now anyway...
oh blah blah bllkfadl;\./.....*howls at moon*
  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

Doesn't Virgin own XFM? Or did i make that up and convince myself it's true?
    • Re: Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

      Capital owns Xfm.
  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

To be honest, when I listen to xfm, I am usually pretty dissapointed. HardFi, Keane, Snow Patrol. Whats next. James cunt?
Imagine if "Xtreme" played stuff like Kid Carpet and Millionaire instead of what I forsee for this shite radio station.
  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

    What's the fucking difference?

Its just Virgin minus that really bad Lou Reed song.

    'Pete and Geoff at brekfest'

Oh how I hate those two old men.
  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

Brightons totallywired - www.totallywired.co.uk is a good alt readio show...

what chance have new and upcoming artists got if xfm and now this crap only play existing bands stuff.

the tiny internet radio stations like rock3radio or something like that will hopefully be the way forward?

    hey ho!
  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

A perfect view of "XTREEEEEMMMMMEEEE" labelling...

  • Virgin launch new alternative to Xfm

Nothing'll beat 6music every in my opinion.

It's all we have on (well I do put the TV now and then), until the missus hears something she hates, and only then will I put Virgin on for 10 minutes, at least they steer away from the standard MOR pot after 10pm, although I'm bound to hear Tracey Chapman's 'Fast Car' at least once a week!
