BBC announce John Peel day

John Peel The BBC have announced that this October 13th will be a special 'Peel Day' across the UK.

Billed as a celebration of Peel's life and contributions to music, the day will be host to gigs across Britain and a 'very special London gig' organised by the BBC's Radio 1.

DiS hopes that the promoters involved will use the day as a way to expose exciting new talent that John would approve of, rather than making a quick buck off the back of a sore loss.

In addition, rumours that Bright Eyes has been booked are currently unconfirmed.

See my thread on the main board - am sure we could do our own day of respect as well!
    • Re: BBC announce John Peel day

Problem is that Peel had such a unique taste and approach to music that no-one else can replicate his genius so any event in his name is going to fall short musically

that said, out of all the figures in british history who are memorialised Peel definately had the most direct affect on me and I'd imagine the same can be said by many readers of this site

His world service programs should not be overlooked either - without them I don't know what I would have done when I lived in Paris, it would have been unbearable.

I think Peel day should be celebrated in a way he would have wanted ie a stadium gig at Anfield with a roster of the great and the good who graced his show plus a raft of unsigned talent for whom the realisation that, due to his untimely, their band would never do a Peel session removed a large part of their raison d'etre

So, October 13th, Anfield - bands that should reform for a one off gig in his honour
      The Smiths
      Ride
      The Undertones
      Can

bands that surely should be on the bill
      PJ Harvey
      Wedding Present
      The Fall

      add to this list...

does anyone want to petition Liverpool city council or Liverpool FC with me?
      • Re: BBC announce John Peel day

My Spidersense says The Undertones is that "special london gig"
    • Re: BBC announce John Peel day

      Hi,

Just wanted to announce that unsigned east london based electrorocknroll band Black Mariah (www.black-mariah.com) have just been chosen to play in Virgin Megastore, Oxford Street at about 6pm, as part of the John Peel Tribute on 13th October. Would be great to see you there!

      Cheers
      • Re: BBC announce John Peel day

Sorry, forgot to mention on other post...after Black Mariah are finished playing the John Peel Tribute gig in Virgin Megastore (6pm on the 13th), we will be putting on our own little JP tribute in the form of an open mic/open decks night at the Dragon Bar, 5 Leonard Street (nr. Old Street tube)...anyone is welcome to come and perform a song or play a record, preferably at the wrong speed...It's gonna be totally shambolic, as we have no idea what time we will be finished in Virgin, but therein lies the fun...see www.black-mariah.com for more details

        Cheers everybody

Yeah. The BBC was 'marginalising' Peel anyway. It's a lovely thought and all that, but it's stretching things a little to say it's a pure tribute to Peel and not, you know, a little bit calculated. I think something 'grass roots' would be much more Peel's style than a big stadium gig or something.

hopefully something will be arranged here in Cambridge.

To kind of repeat what I said on that thread, we should all do something to honour the great things he did for new music (sorry - really cheesy but you know what I mean). It shouldn't be restricted to one day but it's a start. I put a thread up about it just after he died - how it's really important to keep doing diy grassroots stuff now he's gone but I never got round to it myself cos I'm a twat. But I guess the best way to remember him is if everyone who really misses him tries to put something on that helps to promote new/underground music then that would be a great thing. As we're all music-lovers on here then that should definitely include us.

Do it properly and it might remind them what they're missing.

Then hopefully they'll do something about it.

apologies for any perceived self-aggrandisement for posting twice but I forgot to click the 'email me when someone replies' thingy and I think that, even though it seems like a pie in the sky idea it's worth a try...

    who should play?
  • BBC announce John Peel day

It should be John Peel Day every bloody day, why fucking bother with a one off the guy was a legend! The radio would be wicked if decent music got played everyday!! :)
    • Re: BBC announce John Peel day

agreed - but the 13th of October was the day the music died and should be memorialised

maybe I'm nuts but I've already started trying to get the Anfield idea off the ground - perhaps my Carlsberg ad will be useful for something after all...

If they really want to pay tribute to Peel they should just stop straightjacketing presenters with sponsored playlists.

And give Chris Moyles to the poor for food.
  • BBC announce John Peel day

Hoping its good. Radio 1 should focus on giving listeners decent music instead of major label crap.

I have a suspicion that you can't keep the music down, even with a tough stranglehold by some accountants. Somebody is coming to play records on the BBC radio which aren't from the big 4's shit stained stable. And her name starts with a Nnnn.

Music is about music, not money, no matter which way you look at it. Musicians only really need enough money for food, equipment, rent and a moderate quantity of mind expanding substances. Give them too much money and their minds get too stretched by the substances, and become saggy and palsied. I won't name names, but we know who I'm talking about.

Funny thing is that John Peel is more famous than any of the record companies. Time Warner... Eh?
