UPDATED: Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds - Preview

maximo park live at t in the park sonia melot So, you've looked out of the window this afternoon and seen the doom and gloom pouring from the sky and decided that the office isn't actually that bad after all... Well, how about we remind the lucky ticketholders what's to come this weekend by giving you a selection of hot new bands to check out and some old faves for the Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds festivals.

Friday: Reading / Saturday: Leeds

The Cooper Temple Clause
Following two years of self-assessment, brief DJing stints and recording, The Cooper Temple Clause return to the UK live arena with a selection of new material and the experience of 3 months on the road in the US with the likes of The Cure. Not to be missed.

Death from Above 1979
Bringing the almost-camp, two-man disco noise, DFA1979 are an act to be savioured, whatever your mood/state of drunkness. Hopefully they'll play their ace cover of Bloc Party's 'Luno' to make everything lovely as well.

Saul Williams
Saul has been arguably one of Drowned in Sound's artists of the year, with a healthy dosage of articles across the board. For those who have not witnessed Williams before are in for a heady mix of intricate lyricism, perfect beats and outspoken social commentary. A rare gem.

The National
'Abel', The National's flagship tune is fast becoming a staple in indie discos across the land and the accompanying LP 'Alligator' is a highlight of this year's releases. Check out the layered guitar sounds and joyful rhythmic delights at Reading/Leeds this year.

Two Gallants
Having just signed to Saddle Creek, the alt-country-blues magnificence delivered by Two Gallants is waiting to be discovered and enjoyed. Following their star status at this year's South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, this is one of your first proper chances to catch the band in the UK.

Test Icicles
One of the most animated, exciting and almost shambolic (in the nicest way possible) acts around, Test Icicles play to insane backing tracks whilst flailing stylishly and generally being cool. It's hard not to like the trio and at a festival, it will be jokes.

Saturday: Reading / Sunday: Leeds

The Arcade Fire
Those who have already witnessed Canada's Arcade Fire live will be fully aware what to expect. Their debut full-length 'Funeral' has been one of the truly great albums of 2005 and their on-stage performances are beyond comparison. Expect tears of joy and sadness.

The Cribs
It is required of you that you do the following; 1) drink a LOT of beer, 2) get in a dancing mood and 3) go mental for The Cribs - easily the most fun you can have with your clothes on or off.

Sleater-Kinney
For a troupe so far into their collective career, it's fantastic to know that the music S-K are a making today is as vital, if not more than it ever has been. Latest record 'The Woods' is a 2005 female-rock masterpiece and their riotous shows are beyond a comparison. A must-see.

Sunday: Reading / Friday: Leeds

Four Tet
Kieran Hebden produced one of DiS' most-loved albums of all-time in 'Rounds', catch him and his band at Reading & Leeds as a precursor to their headline tour with Explosions in the Sky this Autumn.

Maximo Park
DiS called Maximo Park's debut 'A Certain Trigger', "a magnificent album" and 2005 has been a massive year for the band, scoring a string of Top 40 hits and shifting crate after crate of the afore-mentioned Mercury Music Prize-nominated LP.

The Rakes
After seemingly endless touring and writing, The Rakes finally released debut LP 'Capture/Release' this month to critical and public acclaim. Catch their renowned live set over the weekend.

Hot Chip
Moshi Moshi's Hot Chip like to think of themselves as "a modern day pop group in the spirit of Brian Wilson and Public Enemy." We like to think of them as 'genius'. Chekkit.

Adam Green
US-born Green has been recording songs with his four-track since he was 12, following which he went on to form epochal anti-folk masters The Moldy Peaches. Now at the still tender age of 24, his delicately delivered, masterful acoustic musings are immersive listening.

Komakino
DiS Recordings' very own Derby darlings, Komakino's debut single 'Say Something' sold out in six hours this July and the band have gone on to play to sell-out crowds across the UK. Bring your thinking hat, your dancing shoes and plenty of water/beer/Jack Daniel's to sort your throat out after singing along.

iForward, Russia!
Part of the rather splendid Leeds rock-action scene, iForward, Russia! are a danceable rock force, a brilliant cross-section of intense, defined pop. Catch them now before they surely go stellar.

Nokia Raw Zone Stage
Aspiring musicians among the festival-goers are given the chance to pick up expert music tips from established acts such as Elbow's Guy Garvey and John Hassell of Yeti. The stars will be offering tips ranging from bashing out the perfect chord to wheeler dealering your way through the music industry to budding rockers in a series of on-site master classes. There will also be karaoke at the Rock Up & Play sessions. Oh yes.

Leeds Site Exclusives
If you're joining Team-DiS in trekking to Bramham Park for the Leeds leg of the festival, then you're in for additional, exclusive and quite frankly FUCKING DELICIOUS treats in the form of:

Exclusive Thursday night thisGIRL performance
Yep, DiS Recordings' genre-bending hyperactive genii play a show in the Cabaret tent on the Thursday night of the festival. More than an excuse to pitch your tent for that extra night.

Error in Movies
Our friends at Type2error bring the multimedia love with exclusive sets from Saul Williams and Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies as well as video showcases from Type2error (they've made videos for Bloc Party, The Rakes and more dontchaknow) and a silent movie soundtracked by the delightful YMSS boys, which will be familiar to those of you who attended their event at the ICA earlier this year. It all kicks off in the cabaret tent on Saturday night.

Lee Jeans Unsigned stage
iLiKETRAiNS, 65daysofstatic, This Et Al and more showcase the best of Northern unsigned talent on this three-day extravaganza. Pop along and check out the cream of Manchester. And Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool and more.

DiScuss: Hooray! It's here! Who is popping along? We'll be at Leeds getting silly in fields. Do come and say hello! Who are your picks for this year?

  • Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

And don't forget Adventures Of Loki www.adventures-of-loki.org are playing the unsigned stage - definitely worth a look.

lyca sleep are on at leeds too

"It is required of you that you do the following; 1) drink a LOT of beer, 2) get in a dancing mood and 3) go mental for The Cribs"

I agree - the only way anyone could ever enjoy the Cribs' dull pub-rock is if they were off their face on overpriced, watered-down lager.

That said, this line-up doesn't look too bad (for a Carling festival) - I had no idea who was playing this weekend, and you can't complain with Four Tet, Saul Williams, 65days *and* Sleater-Kinney! New Coopers stuff too, and Adventures of Loki definitely are worth a look.
Not that I'm going, mind, the Electric Picnic line-up was far too appealing...
    • Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

Wasn't one of Adventures of Loki previously in Angelica? I hope so: Angelica were criminally underrated, particularly their barely-released second album.
      • Re: Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

Whoa! Missing the words Dinosaur Jr. in that article! :D Wish I was going though, the line up looks a lot better than last year :(

      BLOOOOOOOOOOOOD BROTHERRSSSSSSSSS!
    • Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

Why didn't they give Reading an "Unsigned Stage"? How hard could it have been to do the same? Not happy about missing thisGIRL, Youfmovies and 65. Although not being in Leeds may mean Colin doesn't try and finger my rectum believing me to be someone else.

Also, The Blood Brothers, Bloc Party, No Comply and Biffy.

      • Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

        GRATITUDE
      • Re: Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

They might not be the most technically gifted band ever.

But they sure do put on a fucking great live show.
        • Re: Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

          Slightly off the music bent...

but how do pubs water down their beer? Have a seperate water line running into the beer lines? Wouldnt this make the beer flat?

Or do they somehow buy it pre-watered down? i.e not what's on the label...?

Or splice open the barrel on arrival, remove some beer, and add some water? I'd like to see this done.

Methinks plastic pint glasses are the true evil.

        • Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

The real gems on every day at Reading Festival are to be found in the tents - there have been some stunning displays waaaay down the order in recent years from Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight, and even bands like Autolux.

It's a treasure trove and makes Reading THE best festival for emerging music bar none - something strangely not touted by the organisers!

Sometimes there's decent stuff on the main stage - No mention of PIXIES which seems rather bizarre to me.

BLOC PARTY are the outstanding breakthrough indie act of the year and should deliver a stunner set. They have been increasingly impressive live. FUTUREHEADS ditto really...

CLOR have perhaps the most interesting and underrated CD of the year. DEvo inspired weirdness - something a little different.

LONGCUT and EDITORS will appear on my list as will BATTLE. Longcut were superb in the Camden Crawl, Editors are the perfect GB answer to Interpol, whilst Battle could be the next big exciting thing after The Rakes have broken through.

BE YOUR OWN PET could be one of those real gems this year, girlie punky afro action - I'm looking forward to them.

I'm a little surprised there's no mention for the ARTIC MONKEYS - surely set for major stardom in the nest 12 months and halfway down the Radio 1 tent bill. It will be a squeeze in there!

Cracking line up this year (provided you don't go anywhere near the utterly clueless Kings Of Leon or Do Me Bad Things when you will be most upset. Jeez
        • Re: Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

I've seen them 2 1/2 times, and they've never impressed me with their live show..
          • Re: Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

            Aye. Kinda annoying..
          • Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

Arctic Monkey's aren't on the radio one stage, there on the carling stage which is even smaller.

Looking forward to Testicicles on Sunday.
          • Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

            oops yep.

            My mistook.
That's why it will be rammed of course!
Rarely gets rammed in the R1 stage (Foos were the last ones weren't they?)

I remember it was a tad "comfortable" when At The Drive-In played teh Carling Tent - I expect it to be very similar for the Arctic Monkeys.

            Test Icicles playing on Sunday?
            Where?
Haven't seen this on any line up yet.
            Do tell!

            • Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

              Sleater Kinney all the way.

Up untill yesterday I was gutted I wasn't going but looking harder at the line up there really isn't too much that grabs me. Apart from Pixies and Queens (both of whom I saw just six days ago in Portugal) and a bit of nostalgia in the form of NOFX and bad Religion. Plus i've already been to the best festival of 2005: Primavera Sound, have ATP December to look forward to, as well as having had my fair share of carling Weekends over the years, hence FUCK READING!!!
            • Re: Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

Supposedly they've been added to the bill to replace the Dresden Dolls.

says they are playing Friday at Reading / Sunday at Leeds.

Excellent! Another band for the list...

              • Re: Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

They're self-confirmed so it seems likely. Really looking forward to seeing them; they really seem like a breath of fresh air

Is it just me or does anyone else think that the ultimate headliner for Reading (or any festival) is Meatloaf. Book him up! It would be awesome. He is still alive right?
              • Re: Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

Last time he played the crowd threw bottles of piss at him and Bonnie Tyler. Those were the days.
              • Re: Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

ive seen the cribs twice, and i think watching a band with a lead singer who wanders away from the mic at the start and end of each line before taking off his trousers in a "ooh-i'm-so-bonkers" way, isn't really what most people look for in a good gig.

                theyre alright on record though.
              • Re: Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds: Preview

the R1 stage rarely rammed? i dont think ive ever been able to get in there in the evenings!

I see that fightstar are midway down the Radio 1 stage on the friday, above the likes of DFA1979 and yourcodenameis:milo... really not justified. At least T in the park put them in the dead zone to open saturday.

*please note, this is a blatant plug*

For those of you attending the Leeds Festival this weekend, Saturday night (Aug 27th) sees a very special collaborative event from Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies and Type2error, on the Cabaret / Comedy Stage no less!

Here's how it's going to go down:

                    8.30 - 9.15 - DJ set & visuals by type2error

9.15 - 9.45 - Saul Williams live (spoken word set)

                    10.00 - 10.45 - Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies live

                    10.45 - 11.15 - DJ set & visuals by type2error

11.15 - 11.45 - 'Error in Movies Cabaret Show' featuring Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies & type2error & Neon Productions

11.45 - 12.15 - type2error video show featuring music videos for Hope of The States, Bloc Party, The Rakes and a selection of short films

                    12.15 - 2.00 - Film screening - '1991 The Year Punk Rock Broke'

The 'Error in Movies Cabaret Show' incorporates a brand new 30 minute piece of exclusive music from YMSS, a freshly-directed half-hour animated abstract film from type2error, plus a 30 minute choreographed dance piece from Adrienne Hart of Neon Productions, all loving brought together for the first time - specifically for this event.

It will be *kinda* similar in theme to the ICA Error In Movies 'Daisies' gig, albeit slightly less cerebral! Also, rather than being a live film soundtrack event this time around it's more of a Youthmovies Vs type2error audio/visual clash.

Our section is set to be a half hour instrumental with piano (very) loosely based on Elgar's 'Nimrod' from the 'Enigma Variations'. Rest assured, It'll be far less wanky than that sounds though.

Oh, and er <cough cough>, finally...

If all the above wasn't enough already, we can now confirm that Youthmovies are going to be providing a musical backing for part of Saul Williams' set!

It's gonna be totally winged on the night - but we've exchanged some transatlantic phonecalls and have agreed to try and do at least one track together... And if it falls flat, well at least you'll be there to see us make dicks out of ourselves in front of an indie-hiphop superstar!

There's an absolutely huge contingent of Youthmovie / type2error friends, girlfriends, family and bands we love (Komakino, 65daysofstatic, iForward Russia!) up in Leeds this weekend, and as such we're gonna be in amazingly good spirits - so make sure you come and say hello if you spot us stumbling around the site!

See you down the front for Maiden...

                    Al Youthmovie x

                    • Re: UPDATED: Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds - Preview

I saw Every Move A Picture on the Carling Stage at Reading. They were ace. Nobody had heard them before Sunday but the energy and songs were undeniable. They started with maybe 200 fans cheering and ended with the entire tent in a frenzy. It was quite impressive to witness. Now I'm on eBay bidding 10 quid for an EP that was originally 5.

Top 5 performances of the festival:
                      5: Maximo Park
                      4: Arcade Fire
                      3: Every Move A Picture
                      2: The Pixies
                      1: Bloc Party
                      • Re: UPDATED: Carling Weekend: Reading & Leeds - Preview

Yep they are great, they have just signed to V2 so look out for stuff in November, December there will be a possible tour. The EP is great, but I think they come off better live and they are nice people too if you get the chance to talk to them.
