It's 'cause planes are bad, innit. Try telling DiS that, though - we're not taking the Megabus to Iceland tomorrow. No way!
Anyway, Thom Yorke - singer in popular rock band Radiohead and solo artist in his own right these days - has told The Guardian that he's uncomfortable with taking aeroplanes, because of the damage they do to the environment.
He's gone as far as saying he might quit touring altogether.
"I think it's a necessary part of what I do, to tour or play live, but I find it unacceptable what the consequences of that are," he said. "Some of our best ever shows have been in the US, but there's 80,000 people there and they've all been sitting in traffic jams for five or six hours with their engines running to get there, which is bollocks."
Yorke continued: "I would consider refusing to tour on environmental grounds, if nothing started happening to change the way the touring operates. I'm trying to figure out a way of getting to Japan by train. I quite fancy that Trans-Siberian whatsitsname but apparently it's a bit scary."
The rest of Radiohead, apparently, aren't too keen on the train idea. See me, I like trains. Hey! That's a band! Whoop.
Saw this
in this morning's Guardian. Good look oh lazy eyed one, you'll probably be killed by some crazed Cossacks.
Thom Yorke
using ethics as publicity again, I hate him
...
Is it just me or are popular musicians getting stupider?
Make an album, you slag!
he just did.
.
I had to get the megabus
back after the sunn0)))/liars gigs to manchester on sunday. It was not pleasant, some degenerate swearing next to me about not being able "to 'ave a fackin' faaag in fackin' scotland". Oh, and unrelenting screaming children.
Actually it might make for a very fertile environment for more shite radiohead songs, droning on and on about society marching happily into the flames of the apocolypse, or something of equivalent sixth-form standard like the rest of their songs.
cheer up
you could maybe cheer yourself up by contemplating how sophisticated your contemporaries at school were - as the sixth form bands i knew were far, far behind mr. Yorke in the lyrical stakes.
It was more the
approach that annoyed me. Thinking that regurgitating part of a politics course text book/guardian article equated to musical genius. When it was just obvious and trite. See also: hope of the states, kinesis, manic street preachers, radiohead. Im sur there are lots of others.
The solitary band at my sixth form did bloodhound gang covers; very funny and entirely bad.
someone remind him
it's an island.
he'll need a boat, too ;)
Perhaps
he could stop making music...cos that uses resources as well Thom...
he cut down on plastic on the eraser
and released the art as pdf, but he did use a lot of card
trees grow
back.
Oh
The never-ending suffering of being Thom...
I Read An Article Once
About Thom's protesting the environmental standards here in the States while driving across country with TWO truckloads of gear for their shows. I think the writer actually called him out on it.

Shame Chris Martin doesn't feel the same - I love to see a man squirm

The trans Siberian Railway is awesome.
I saw him on the ITV news last night
he actually didn't mess it up this time, but the person who had made the video about called the big ask campaign the "just ask" one. made me cringe, a lot
Well..
..it all looked like a well-informed ethical point until:
'I quite fancy that Trans-Siberian whatsitsname but apparently it's a bit scary.'
Twat.
Dear Thom...
If you don't get on the plane, it will still fly. It will still pollute the environment. Only you won't be on it.
And your train will be delayed, you'll probably encounter about 300 rail replacement services, and the food and drinks will cost you a bomb.
More fool you, I say.
if everybody said the same thing...
..
We'd need more trains. And more tracks.
At a great cost to the environment.
Ho hum.
he is being a bit silly
But more trains and more track is better than exponentional more cars and roads. At a great cost to the environment. HO HUM.
congratulations
he read last week's big issue! woopdeefuckingdo.
thom yorke...
has the personality of a wet fart. morrissey complains but at least he's funny.
He's right.
Mock but also listen. He has a point.
Agreed.
Planes are unsafe, but cars have a higher risk of killing you, theoretically.
Musicians really need to get a sanity test. This is getting ridiculous. But hilarious I'll admit.
he should hook up with davey cameron
and tour on a tandum bike
I'm pretty sure
trains aren't pollution-free. I reckon he should row.
.
I don't think this is an unreasonable statement to make. A lot of people recently have made the decision not to fly anymore, because it is so damaging to the environment, so I don't think this is just some publicity thing. And as for the 'planes will still be flying even if you're not on them' argument, there's only so much an individual can do in this world of environmental fuck-ups, so at least he's doing what he can. Having said all this, I think I'd like to travel round the world too much to give it up just yet.
I think...
When you stop and wipe away the whole Guardian Reader/Fair Trade middle class guilt thing. Motley Crue have probably done more to save the planet than Thom.
Also
The biggest polluter is still America by a fucking long way, so why the fuck should anyone else bother until they do?
I'm also sick of the enviroment being my fault as opposed to big multinationals....like EMI who Radiohead made 6 albums for. I walk 3 miles to work, I don't own a car. I recycle and now some cunt wants to take my fucking cheap weekend to Amsterdam away from me????
Hey Thom..
The USA is the biggest polluter in the world.
So don't go there, or sell records there, until they agree to change.
No, I thought not.
No one else
should do anything about the environment until America do? That's fucking stupid.
So all of us
who aren't celebrities and maybe can't afford to take the train or be rickshaw ridden around everywhere should just stay put should we? How dare we should want to go on holiday and see the world at affordable prices.
twat
we may not have a world to go look at
if we dont change things
at least he is making a point no one else ever talks about i hadnt thought about it...
i dont think he told you to take a train you fool..
THE POINT WAS GETTING THE GOVERMENT TO COMMET TO A 3% REDUCTION OF CARBON EMMISIONS
LOOK INTO THINGS BEFORE YOU START SHOUTING
BON VOUAGE SMALL BRAIN
agreed!
he's not trying to make everyone who flies on planes feel guilty, he's just doing what he thinks is right as he is fortunate enough to be able to afford it, but he never said 'everyone should stop flying on planes like me' ...and obviously trains are damaging to the environment, but less so! the world is all we have, we should look after it.
Perhaps you should learn basic grammar and how to
spell simple words such as 'voyage' and 'commit' before you lael somebody 'small brain.' Just because trees flout the English language there is no reason for you to follow suite. Crusty cunt.
label.
I am a hypocritical cunt but who cares.
I would like to
say this to Thom:
Do not feel guilty my friend, nor berate yourself, for touring the world is a part of your job. (Ok, so if you were solo you could lose the trucks and just carry your laptop across America)
It's all the business folk who are taking flights constantly and unnecessarily that are doing the most damage. The senior staff where I work are constantly going off on "business trips" or more accurately "jollies" abroad for tenuous reasons.
He's got a point...
Maybe a lot of people don't realise how much damage aircrafts do to the environment?
i love radiohead
and i like that theyre enviromentally and politically aware... but quitting touring, and pissing off a hell of a lot of fans just because they dont want to get on an aeroplane?
ridiculous!
yorke
Again Yorke (millionaire- Blunkett look-alike) using green issues to publicise his latest under whelming world tour, is he swimming to the U.S. and using electric trucks NO!! He expects us to stop going on holiday and live in the dark while he continues earning money by touring the world with trucks, planes, lights, large PA, while thousands of misguided fans get in there big cars to go and see him. His carbon footprint must be as big as his ego, do us a favour & stop making your depressingly shite music – that will help save the planet & my ears!
Mentalist
Remember the word Environmentalist has the word mentalist in it!!!
