Further Darkness doom and gloom: band gets dropped

Darkness 150x150

Does bad news usually arrives in threes? If so, I wouldn't want to be in The Darkness round about now...

Following yesterday's news that the band's singer, Justin Hawkins, had quit the band in an attempt to correct his drug problem, comes word that the remaining three have now been dropped by their label, Atlantic.

Ouch. Talk about being sympathetic.

The band - who plan to continue with bassist Ritchie Edwards on vocals - are yet to make any official statement. Atlantic's decision arrives on the back of much speculation to the same effect, though: rumours of their parting of company have been bubbling ever since the release of the group's under-appreciated second album, One Way Ticket To Hell... and Back.

Coming tomorrow: news that the three remaining members are to recruit Lil' Chris and The Hoff for a 'series' of Christmas shows, starting in Bognor Regis on December 20 and ending in Hull on December 21.

  • OH NOZE

    • imagine only having a job because you are in Justin Hawkins' band

that would hurt, that would hurt a lot.

  • gigs in hull are ACE

lightning bolt in hull is one of the most perfect experiences of my life

    • the joke just isn't

      funny anymore

  • ...

I liked The Darkness, I liked the songs. I'm probably the only person who visits this site that either does or would admit to it but nevermind. But to carry on without Justin is surely not an option, even to the deluded.

    • I admit it

And I agree with you wholeheartedly.

    • so...

you don't think the music is good enough to stand on it's own without Hawkins' *ahem* singing...

well if that's what the fans think then no wonder they were dropped.

Isn't the new singer/bassist just a replacement for the original bassist anyway?

      • it's true

        he could't sing!

  • The Darkness

and Lil' Chris went to the same school donchaknow.

    • ^^ Really?

      They've aged badly

      • In other news

"Atlantic Records in dropping band at the slightest sniff of a loss in profits" shocker

  • ...

I may look ecstatic, but inside I'm a sad clown.

  • oh well. . .

Shit as they say does happen.

Rather than get to upset about it they should be grateful that they were at one time successful, touring the world, making some cash, making a lot of people happy and the rest of all that showbiz stuff which mere mortals like myself will never experience.
They must of known it was never going to last and should be chuffed about how far they got.

  • withpaperwings

I appreciate your attempt to be witty and/or condescending there but I don't see myself as a representative of The Darkness' fanbase, heaven forbid I should put myself as such a target on here of all places. If you want me to elaborate - probably not - it's just a simple fact. How many rock bands have made it work after losing a frontman? AC/DC, Maiden, that's about it.

    • nirvana!

      • Novoselic Away!

Now working as a Superhero, putting the cess in success.

        • Marillion

          Genesis

          ELO

          Spinal Tap

Spot the odd one out and win £5.

    • Maiden?

with the best will in the world, you couldn't really count the Blaze years it 'working'. A brief flash of "hold on, this may all be OK" spiraling down to "shit shit... does anyone still have Brooce's number? I've got me lucky groveling pants on".

      • Ummm.

Sure he wasn't talking about Diano - Dickinson?

    • As I said above, they've done phenomenally well for a pisstake

Whether the others carry on as The Darkness is debatable. I don't think they could carry on and be taken seriously, despite being good musicians, simply because they'll always be associated with Justin's public persona. Many bands have been more successful after changing singer (AC/DC, Faith No More, Black Flag, er... Genesis) but none of them has been quite so drastically pigeonholed as these guys. They should invest the spoils of the last 3 years in blue chip stock and go live on a farm before they piss it all up the wall in the face of rejection and frustration.

  • the darkness' bassist is called ritchie edwards???

    so that's where he's been...

  • This Week

keeps bringing the good news: more Dinosaur jr and no more Darkness

...heres to more good news such as people finding sense and a mass refusal to buy the new razorlight single

    • van halen?????

      • Does this mean the restaurant in Holloway Road

with the "as recomended by the Darkness" sign and pictures, may take them down now?

  • ianMD

When I say Maiden - I mean't the change from DiAnno to Dickinson, not Dickinson to Blaze Bayley! hahaha And Van Hagar was and should always be viewed as an abomination.

    • They'll be back.

With Justin, all cleaned up. You'll see.

      • I reckon they will, yeah

It'll be a sun exclusive in 2 years time.
