Pulling the wires from the wall: Delgados get on their bikes

delgados Oh dear... Glasgow's The Delgados have called it a day after more than ten years of bicycle obsession, Mercury-nomination and glorious indie-pop loveliness. The record label they founded themselves, Chemikal Underground, gave this announcement earlier today:

"The Delgados, influential figures in Glasgow's independent music scene for over 10 years, have announced that they are to amicably disband. The reason has been put down to the departure of their bass player Stewart Henderson who informed the band in the New Year that he did not wish to make another album. The Delgados have always been known as uniquely collaborative songwriters and as such, it was decided that the band could not continue without all of its original members.

"The Delgados leave behind them 5 critically acclaimed albums including 'The Great Eastern', 'Hate' and last year's 'Universal Audio'. Their two principal songwriters Emma Pollock and Alun Woodward will be pursuing individual projects and drummer Paul Savage will continue production duties at the band's Chem19 Studios in Hamilton.

"The four friends will continue to run their record label Chemikal Underground in this, its 10th Anniversary year, with releases scheduled for Malcolm Middleton, Mother & The Addicts and Arab Strap. They are extremely grateful to everyone who has supported The Delgados over the course of their career.

"We would especially like to thank all of our fans for your wonderful support. Don't be too upset everyone...get a massive curry out, turn the stereo up and play your albums at full volume."

Good idea...*reaches for 'Hate'*...

Noooooo! I just start getting into the Delgados and they split? No justice in the world :(

gutted...the great eastern is an essential album

Re: Pulling the wires from the wall: Delgados get on their bikes

I am gutted, too. They were a great band, and only getting better (sob...)

i'm gonna miss them, but i've got to respect their reasons for splitting. shame i'll never get to see them again, but at least they're staying in the business, not becoming plumbers or something.

shame shame shame. no danger was one of the great indie singles of the last 10 years.

Bummer.

I think The Great Eastern was my favourite too.

10 years though, it's a long time.

yeah, after getting over my initial annoyance, i can see that they have had a good innings. I'm sure by concentrating on the label and solo projects they'll have a hand in more great scottish music down the years.

hate is such a lovely album :)

Let's hope the remaining members start doing one of those 'collaboration projects'. When Blink 182 do it, it's wankerish, but The Delgados should carry on making music in whatever awkward form they deem possible.

The Great Eastern,
Hate,
Peliton,
Universal Audio,
Domestiques.

In That Order.

RIP. You were awesome.

I'm geniuenly quite upset by this news, they've always made such beautifully dark pop music and some of their albums rank up there with SFA, Eels and Flaming Lips in my opinion. 'Peloton' in particular is an album that I've cherished for a long time, my only regret is that I only saw them live the once and that was their rather shaky Reading Festival performance in 2000. I will miss them dearly.

Re: Pulling the wires from the wall: Delgados get on their bikes

Remember seeing them tour The Great Eastern with their string quartet in Manchester (Hop & Grape).
Great, GREAT gig.
Not one bad album at all.

Pulling the wires from the wall: Delgados get on their bikes

A terrible shame. Kicking myself for not seeing them last tour. Like others have said though, they did have a good innings, and I guess it's better they go out now rather that after they've started going downhill. It's just hard to ever see them going downhill.

*sob*

They given a lot to the Scottish Music scene perhaps they will do even more from behind the scenes, finding and promtoing new bands through Chemikal.

Definitely one of the most underrated band of the last ten years. Great Eastern should have won the Mercury, it was probably too classy and delicate. I can't think of any band to replace them... Sad sad sad news. Sadder only would be the same news from Teenage Fanclub. But hey... think of the La's, House of Love and Wedding Present : never say never again !
