Patti Smith to play final CBGBs show
Posted: 03 Oct '06, 11:59
Legendary punk Patti Smith is to play the final gig at New York's CBGBs venue later this month.
Smith will perform at the venue - due to close following an increase in rent - on October 15. The singer played at the club in the late '70s, when it was making it name as the place to see and hear punk rock.
CBGBs owner, Hilly Kristal, is to open another version of the club in Las Vegas; it's expected to be ready for 2008. He intends to make the new CBGBs as similar to the New York club as possible, telling reporters:
"I am taking the bars with me, I am taking the stage - I'm taking the urinal that Joey [Ramone] pissed in with me. I'm going to take a lot of things - anything that makes this place CBGBs."
And turn it
into a Vegas style glitzy bar....I don't think it's gonna work.
so
why close it in the first place...?
i'm going to be staying
across the road from it the night before. COOL.
...
its a fucking room!
and a shitty room at that.
it holds no magic secrets of the power of rock. it did not invent punk.
anything good about CBGBs, the bands brought with them. it did not invent The Ramones. The Ramones invented The Ramones.
shut the fucking thing down and stop worshipping the past.
