Posted: 24 Nov '04, 11:04
Radio 1 have announced details of a John Peel tribute night by way of a night
of live music on Thursday 16th December.
Starting at 7pm, Steve Lamacq will host a show from the BBC Maida Vale studios, home of many a Peel Session. Throughout the evening, every studio at Maida Vale will be taken over with a host of bands performing and reminiscing about John Peel and the music he loved.
The schedule for the night will run as follows:
7pm-8pm
Teenage Dreams So Hard To Beat - A one-hour documentary celebrating his extraordinary
life. Tributes will come from the Undertones, Orbital, the Cure, New Order,
Supergrass, Robert Plant, Underworld, Siouxsie Sioux and the Buzzcocks.
8pm-11.30pm
Live music from bands that John championed including Underworld, The Wedding
Present, Melys, Steveless, Trencher, Hefner, Stuart Murdoch, Graham Coxon and
Nina Nastasia with other bands to be confirmed.
11.30pm-1am
DJs with performances including Dynamite MC, Alex Patterson, Dave Clarke, Hixxy
and Coldcut.
Steve Lamacq said "It should be a really special night, for friends
and family. Many of the bands and DJs who are coming down are part of Peel's
extended musical family - and everyone's been terrifically helpful and enthusiastic
in organising the show. I'll be anchoring the night but there will be guest
DJs crashing the decks and people wandering in and out. We want it to be pretty
spontaneous in honour of the Great Man."

hefner?? i thought they'd long gone. is this live, livelive, or livelivelive in the words of the man himself?-
Re: Radio 1 announce Peel tribute night
sort of gone, but darren still plays hefner stuff. i think it was not so much the band splitting as taking a hiatus.
It sounds like a fine night. Mr peel would be proud

Re: Radio 1 announce Peel tribute night
Do yrself a favour, flog yr Manics tickets and crack open a bottle of red at home in honour of the man...
I am still feeling really sad about John Peel's untimely passing. He was an inspiraton to so many and gave genuinely original art a place on national radio. Radio 1 must, must, must carry on his work - you cannot replace the man, but a tean of music fanatics should get a couple of hours a night, to play the glorious, the esoteric, the different, the independent, the otherwise ignored.
Fuck daytime radio, it's a blight on the national consciousness. A rotating playlist of about ten new pop singles and then a bunch of aging pop hits from Travis, or whoever.
Bollocks to them and their shite.-
Re: Radio 1 announce Peel tribute night
This is so fucking spot on. Daytime radio is so bad it has to be some sort of Governmnet plot to numb us into inaction - a bit like soap operas. Fuck them all and their Woolworths tunes.

i would imagie it's all on listen again, hope so anyway, I want a copy of this. -

The best tribute Radio One could do in honour of John Peel is to get rid of the playlists and let the dj's/ presenters play whetever they like - like John Peel did. Admittedly you might still get crap off some of them, but each slot would differ and be so much more personal, just like John's shows were. -

Do you think Radio 1 would seriously do something so honourable? i'm not so sure... -
Radio 1 announce Peel tribute night
I think not, wouldn't really fit in with the *majority* -
Radio 1 announce Peel tribute night
yeah, how would all those great girl bands get radio play if R1 didnt force their djs into it? i'm shocked.. -
Radio 1 announce Peel tribute night
Yeah I know they'll never do something so adventureous, but a girl can dream can't she?!
