Arctic Monkeys in average single release shocker...

Well, I suppose it had to happen at some time. With the ink still not dry on all the superlatives thrown at their Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not long-player, the only route was always going to be downhill from that point on.

That's not to say that 'Leave Before The Lights Come On' is particularly bad. It isn't, but it doesn't grab you by the balls, kicking and screaming, like '...Dancefloor' and '...Sun Goes Down' before it. As a marker for the next chapter in the band's story, doesn't really offer anything that we didn't already know and haven't heard before.

Of course this will sell by the truck load. Then again, so does lime-flavoured Coca-Cola, which is equally baffling and leaves a sickly aftertaste, too.

Merely a blip, then, or another case of 'too much too soon equals washed-up'? Only time will tell...

  • Arctic Monkeys 6 / 10
  • Singles

They've really made some odd singles choices... It's beyond me why the 'Cigarette Smoke' demo wasn't on the album or released as a single, only twisted beyond recognition for the EP.

  • gah

Lime flavoured Coca-cola is like an orgy in my mouth.

Top 3 Flavours of Coca Cola
    1. Vanilla
    2. Lime
    3. Lemon

    • Err

You missed Cherry diet coke, the most superb brown thing in the world

      • Vanilla...

        Wins everytime.

        Coke Zero is vile.

        • If you get a flight to/friend in America

You'll revise that list after you try Black Cherry Vanilla Coca Cola.

Blood Orange Coca Cola Sango from Belgium and the French Coca-Cola Bl?K (which comes in an aluminium coke bottle, like the Japanese Saporo which comes in a aluminium pint glass) are also top banana.

We used to have a dodgy corner shop that sold these half height cans of 'tropical', cherry and strawberry pepsi from the east as well. Alas, that corner shop's now an estate agents.

        • its fair to say

the coke zero ad campaign is one of the most misguided and idiotic i've ever seen.who the fuck buys into that?! baffled.

          • I do actually quite like Coke Zero

(although the advertising campaign is indeed stupid).

I hate vanilla coke though. Ugh.

    • welcome to the dark side

drink coca-cola, yes my pretties, drink, Drink, DRINK! Mwah hah ha haa...!

    • Yummy....

      Thats what it is.

      • this song is a grower

especially when you see the video

      • too many releases

in too little time suggests their record company recognise they will be a flash in the pan that will soon die away, and so are milking their army of fans for all theyre worth before time ruins out.

p.s - coca cola is evil. it is also the 'default' purchase for people so brainwashed by branding they cannot branch out and try a brand they do not recognise. because, let's be honest. coke is foul. in all its forms.

    • i can't see why

..this record deserves a 6? It's a great record! So it doesn't grab you by the balls kicking and screaming? If every record a band released was a ball-grabber i'd soon be bored. But I think this record is a step in a new direction. I suspect if someone other than arctic monkeys did this song, there'd be a few more favourable comments. Musically and lyrically, it is more like Morrissey (and even bordering on The Long Blondes territory) than just sounding like any of the previous AMs records. For that I think they should be applauded. Frankly I think this review is a tad narrow.

      • milking monkeys

I doubt this release is the record company's preference. I could be wrong but isn't it standard practice for record companies to discourage these kind of speedy one-after-the-other releases? Wouldn't they much rather milk the album for all its worth before confusing the bovine hoards with - shock, horror - a further EP release? Like I said - I could be wrong. I don't work for a record company, afterall. Hence the continued presence on my septum.

        • It's Domino

          They're cool.

          • all arctic monkeys

            singles are average.

            • or worse !

              All of them.

              • Good Shout

                theepc. totally agree.

This single grows on me everytime i hear it.

British music would be a lesser place without the Arctic Monkeys and that's a bold statement considering how many great bands this island has produced in recent years.

Atctic Monkeys arne't a long term band but that's good cus i hope they don't hang around like a bad smell... like a certain irish quartet by the name of U2

    • Nah

I dont like any of these silly coke flavours one bit
