Another month, another Marquee: London venue offers free nights

London's Marquee Club (um, well, another club called The Marquee at least) opens later this month, and as way of celebration offers YOU, the public, some rather splendid (mostly) free shows. Nice.

The free shows, also in aid of Make Trade Fair, go a little something like this:

27 Sep: The Magic Numbers and The Tiny
28 Sep: New Rhodes, Tom Vek, Fans Of Kate and Culture Industry
29 Sep: Dirty Vegas (£10)
30 Sep: Amplifier, Mau Maus and The Aeroplanes
1 Oct: Time For Change Benefit featuring acoustic sets from David Poe, Robyn Hitchcock, Darren Hayman, Imogen Heap and Ed Harcourt (£10)
4 Oct: Art Brut, Kaito and Help She Can't Swim
5 Oct: The Hidden Cameras (£8.50)
8 Oct: SPECIAL GUESTS + Do Me Bad Things + Dead! Dead! Dead! + Peace Burial at Sea

That last one just might have something to do with your friends at DiS. Maybe. Or maybe it doesn't? You'll just have to sit tight and keep 'em peeled. The Marquee can be found on Leicester Square. Gig-goers are encouraged to make a donation to charity at the free shows. Nice.

Towers of LOndon are not playing. They're one of the worst bands in the world.
Instead we have the fantastic PEace Burial at Sea
    • Re: Another month, another Marquee: London venue offers free nights

        • Another month, another Marquee: London venue offers free nights

Help She Can't Swim are excellant too.

With Art BRut and Kaito? That might be very good indeed.

          • Re: Another month, another Marquee: London venue offers free nights

65*days... are playing my clubnite at Buffalo Bar next month (i think it's October 14th... i should know really), along with the similarly amazing Jason & The Astronauts and Up-c Down-c.

Astronauts are signed to the wicked Kent based Unlabel, they're a kind of electronic-tinged fuzzy shouty math-rock thing, it's really fecking good. Up-c Down-c are another Kent band signed to Tap 'n' Tin Records, an awesome noisy post-rocking outfit with 2 drummers and are recording with Steve Albini soon, ... so all in all it should be a rather noisy night! Come along if you're in London.

            PS sorry for plugging
            • Re: Another month, another Marquee: London venue offers free nights

              65days AND JatA?
Shit, I'm there. Up-C Down-C sound good, too.
Reviewed JatA in the current Rock Sound... ch-ch-ch-check it out.

              PS sorry for plugging.

GREAT IF U LIVE IN LONDON!!!

BUT I LIVE IN CORNWALL/DEVON!!! SO NOT SO GREAT FOR ME!!!

Fans Of Kate are pretty cool... saw them in Manchester @ In The City on Saturday... the room was so packed, some people couldn't even get through the door. Can't be a bad sign can it?

Imogen Heap? Wow!!! I didn't know she was still around? saw her at a festival what must be 5 years ago or more now! she was fucking great!

She brought an album out (i think it was on almo sounds?! will have to try to find it and give it another spin). It was called i Megaphone if i remember correctly?! great album!!! great singer!!!

Does anyone have any info on Imogen Heap and what she is/has been up to?!!!

Is the review online? We had JatA play last month too they were frickin' great. Lovely chaps. There's quite a few wicked Kent bands around at the moment.

Up-C Down-C's full name is Up-C Down-C Left-C Right-C ABC Plus Start... i think it's an old Sonic cheat or something, but they're really good.
                • Re: Another month, another Marquee: London venue offers free nights

Thought it might be the same band.
No, rock sound review isn't online, but you can go to your newsagents and rip it out. Or just buy the magazine, whatever (it's got some good stuff on the CD, if you overlook fucking HIM).
                  • Re: Another month, another Marquee: London venue offers free nights

Well, i have grown rather adept at avoiding HIM.
              • Another month, another Marquee: London venue offers free nights

Its a shame its in Leicester Square the ultrachav area of London - still we cant have it all can we -at least Art Brut are playing

And the TOwers of London are shocking
                • Re: Another month, another Marquee: London venue offer

One of them was "special guest judge" on the Air Guitar tower thing at Reading this year. He spent the evening hanging around trying to look important, swigging from a bottle of smirnoff ice and looking for all the world like he was a member of Guns n Roses in 1987 and fell into a Donnie Darko-style time portal, emerging in 2004.

                  We did laugh.
                  • Re: Another month, another Marquee: London venue offer

You were right to do so.
Expect to see some kind of retroc*nt repellant on sale at TESCO very soon.
                • Re: Another month, another Marquee: London venue offers free nights

How can a free show be 'in aid of' something? promoter making a donation? pass around a big hat?
                  • Re: Another month, another Marquee: London venue offers free nights

Proceeds from the show on Fri 1st Oct, a £10 ticket, will go to Oxfam/Fair Trade. Audiences at the free shows can make donations if they wish.
                    Simple as.
