The Stone Roses

I don't know if that's a compliment or an insult. The Stone Roses formed as goths in early '80s Manchester, flirted with indie, made possibly the greatest debut album of all time, welded hip-hop with indie for the timeless 'Fool's Gold', went to a Welsh retreat for five years to make the balls-out rock of the under-rated Second Coming then split in a blaze of infamy following departure of both guitarist John Squire and the voice of Ian Brown.

They made some amazing records. And some awful ones. Buy the debut, and Second Coming. And 'Fool's Gold'. You don't need the rest.
